UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PETTIGRE\V, OF JOLIET, ASSIGNOR TO THE ILLINOIS STEEL COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BlLLET-CONVEYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,287, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed August 16, 1890. Serial No. 362,168. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PETTIGREW, of Joliet, \Vill county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Billet-Conveyors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention, which is an improvement on the one described in the Smith, Treat, and Pettigrew application, filed July 18, 1890, Serial No. $50,152, is to provide for 1 supporting a billet-conveyer, particularly at points where it is desirable to have as little frame-work as possible; and the invention the yard where the billets are to be delivered. In such case, however, if the frame-work is dispensed with or the conveyor only supported at long intervals, the weight of the traveling billets will cause the conveyer to sway from side to side, and, side guards not being admissible at the points where it is desired to dump the billets, this swaying will cause the rollers to mount and run off the track. To overcome this diifieulty I provide for holding the conveyerin a straight line by means of guy-ropes secured to the side of the I-beams and anchored to the ground. Any number of these guy-ropes desired may be used. Extending oif from the track at suitable angles, the guy-ropes do not fill up the yard or interfere with the piling of the billets.
I claim- In combination with a billet-conveyer, guyropes secured to the I-beam and anchored to the ground at either side of the track, substantially as described.
CHARLES PETTIGREW.
