CLIFTOX l3. BEACH, OF CLEVELAND, OIIIO.
MACHINERY FOR FORMING CAR-WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION formin' part of Letters Patent No. 445,238, dated January 27', 1891.
Original application filed November 5, 1888, Serial No. 290,042. Divided and this application filed September 11, 1890. Serial No. 364,667. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFTON B. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Forming Car- IVheels, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to car-wheel-forming machinery.
It consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
This application is a division of application filed by me November 5, 1888, Serial No. 290,042.
Referring to the drawings, which represent my improved i'nachinery and theblank on which it operates, Figure l. is a plan view of the anvil, lower die, and ejector. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper or hammer die. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the anvil, lower die, ejector, and hammer, taken on the dotted line of Figs] and 2, the dies being separated and a piece of metal being placed on the die ready to be swaged. Fig. 4. is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the anvil and dies, the latter in closed position, with a swaged car-wheel blank in position. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the swaged car-wheel blank.
A is the anvi1,provided on its face with dieopening a and with vertical opening a, extending downwardly through the anvil. Horizontal opening I) extends from said vertical opening to the periphery of the an vil. Anvildie C fits in said dieopening, and is provided with vertical opening 0 Fitting in the latter opening is ejector l), the standard (Z of which is provided with shoulder d and annular slot (Z The lower extremity of said ejector fits in opening 6, and is provided with shoulder 6 adapted to engage with floor a. Extending through horizontal opening I; is rod f, having its inner bifurcated extremity f engaging with annular slot d Its outer extremity is pivoted to lever 9, that is in turn pivoted to the mill-floor. Coil-spring f surrounds said standard and has engagement at its upper extremity against shoulder d and at its lower extremity on the mill-floor. Annular shoulder g of the ejector has solid bearing when in lowered position against the annular shoulder g of the vertical opening a Anvil-die C has its face formed in several elevations, annular groove cbeing most deeply depressed. In this the tread of the wheel is formed. In the next outer depression or annular groove 0 the flange portion of the wheel is formed. An annular projected web-forming portion 0 is raised in relative relief above groove 0 and surrounds or incloses the central projected disk portion 7L2 and also face It. This web-forming portion is provided with a series of radial grooves 7L, which are in depth intermediate of the groove portions 0 and the web-forming portion The face lb of the ejector forms a part of this die and is flush with the web-forming portion of the same. Said face is provided with the projected portion 7L2 and the four projected lug portions 1'. Corresponding disk and lug portions jj are respectively formed on the face of the hammer-die J, that is attached to hammer K. Said disk and lug portions register with the corresponding parts on the anvildie. Said ham mer-die is further provided with the flat annular portion 7r, the radial ribforming groove or depressed portion 7; and the projected web-forming portion 70".
In operation I place a piece of metal of suitable size and of soft swaging-heat 011 the lower die and thoroughly swage it by means of the upper die until it conforms to the form of the two dies when brought together, as shown by the blank L, Figs. i and 5. \Vhen the swagin g is completed, the lever g is drawn back, thus releasing the bifurcated rod ffrom engagement with the annular slot (1 of the ejector. The spring f is then free to exert its power, forcing upward the ejector and carrying with it in its upward movement the blank and releasing said blank from the die. Therenpon the blank may be removed and the operation repeated. The blank may then be finished in any suitable manner.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings set forth in detail mechanism embodying my invention. Change may be made therein, provided the principles of construction respectively recited in the following claims are employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In car-wheel-forming machinery, a swaging-die provided with a central projected disk, substantially as set forth.
2. In car-Wheel-formin g machinery, a swaging-die provided with a central projected disk portion and an annular projected portion inclosing said projected disk portion, said disk portion projected in greater relief from the face of the die than said inclosing portion, substantially as set forth.
3. In car-wheel-forming machinery, a swaging-die provided with a central projected disk portion, a smooth outer annular portion, and an intermediate projected portion lying between said two former portions, said central projected disk portion projected in greater relief from the face of the die than the face of said intermediate projected portion, substantially as set forth.
4. In car-wheel-forming machinery, the combination of two swaging-dies, each provided with central projected disk portions, said disk portions registering with each other, substantially as set forth.
5. In machinery for forming car wheels, the combination of two swaging-dies, the one die provided with a central projected disk portion and an annular projected portion inclosing said projected disk portion, said disk portion projected in greater relief from the face of the die than is said inclosing portion, the companion die provided with a central projected disk portion registering with the central projected disk portion of said die, substantially as set forth.
6. In machinery for forming car-wheels, the combination of two swaging-dies, the one die provided with a groove, a central projected disk portion, and an annular projected portion intermediate of the latter two, the
heightin relative relief of said latter projected portion being less than that of the disk portion, said annular projected portion provided with a series of radial receding portions, said companion dieprovided with a plain outer annular portion, a central projected disk portion and an outer projected portion intermediate of the two, said central projected disk portion, having greater relative height of relief from the face of the die than does said intermediate projected portion, substantially as set forth.
7. A swaging-die provided with a central projected disk vertically adjustable, substantially as set forth.
8. A swaging-die provided with a springpressed projected disk portion vertically adj ustable, substantially as set forth.
9. A swaging-die provided witha central projected disk portion vertically adjustable and having a solid bearing, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination, with a swaging-die provided with a spring-pressed central projected disk portion vertically adjustable, of a clutch engaging therewith, said disk portion having a solid bearing, substantially as set forth.
11. In machinery for forming car-wheels, the combination of an anvil-die provided with an annular groove and an opening, an ejector fitting within said opening and having its face flush with the surrounding face of the die, said ejector having a solid bearing, and a hammer-die adapted to engage with said first die and ejector, substantially as set forth.
12. In machinery for forming car-wheels, the combination, witha die provided with an annular groove and an annular projected portion lying within said groove and in greater projection from the face of the die than is said groove, said die also provided with an opening, of an ejector fitting within said opening, the marginal portions of said ejector flush with the surrounding face of the die, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing to be my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of September, A. D. 1890.
. O. B. BEACH. Vitnesses:
J. D. FAY, GEO. A. SNOW.
