ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,231, dated January 27, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that we, ALFRED PAGE,a citizen of the United States, and SAMUEL S. BLooM,

a subject of the Emperor of Russia, both residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de- IO scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which :5 form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to artificialteeth, and has for its objectthe provision of economical and reliable means for uniting the teeth to the plate.

The invention consists, essentially, in securing across an opening or bore in the teeth one or more platina strips, to which, after the teeth are baked, a metallic pin is secured by means of a suitable solder or cement. This pin is provided with a head and is made to project beyond the inner side of the teeth to engage the vulcanite or other plate, and thus render the union between the teeth and the plate reliable and secure.

The present invention is a division of an application in the same line of invention filed by us on February 6,1890, Serial No. 339,405, and the illustration of this present application shown also in the aforesaid application.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention. 1

A is a group of teeth and the gum ofporcelain or other similar material baked or annealed in the usual way.

In the wire or ridge on the inner side we provide openings (L61, of a suitable depth and size to receive one or more transverse platina strips 1) and pins 0 engaged therewith. \Vhen the teeth are being formed, the platina strip or strips b are placed across the openings a a, and when the teeth are baked the strip or :5 strips will be secured in place.

In our former application, above referred to, we claimed a pin having ahead which was to be inserted till it reached back of the strip or strips and was then turned to give it a secure hold. In the present application we use a double, pronged,or split pin, which is made to clamp upon one or both of the strips, and wit-l1 this form of pin it is preferable to employ only one strip, although two can be used. 6

In the drawings, 0 is the pin having the slit or bifurcated stem 0, which is intended to straddle and clamp upon thestrip b, as shown in Fig. 2. The pin may be and preferably is made of a single piece of strap metal bent to form the head 0 and the two parts of the stem 0'. This will give a springy or clamping effect to the stem. \Ve may also make a recess 0 in one of the sides of the stem, in which the strip is to lie and give a more secure hold. The head C projects out from the side, as shown in Fig. 2, to be embedded in the plastic material of the plate and make the union between the plate and the teeth secure.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in an artificial tooth having an opening in the side, of a strip set 8 across said opening, and a pin having a bifurcated stem clamped upon the strip, as set forth.

2. The combination, in an artificial tooth having an opening, as described, of a strip set 90 across said opening, and a bifurcated pin having a recess in one limb for receiving the strip, as set forth.
