SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,216, dated January 27', 1891.

To (all whom it may concern.-

3e it known that I, ADOLPHUS Y. ANDREWS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pocket-books; and it consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification, and are shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide a pocket-book with guards to prevent the loss of money or other articles from the interior by slipping out through the ends of the book, and also to give greater strength and neat ness to it.

In the ordinary collapsible pocket-book formed of leather the edges of the money receptacles or pockets are exposed at the ends of the book, and when these become worn or torn there is danger of articles or money being lost through them.

In carrying out my invention I form the pocket-book with guards to protect these edges of the money pockets or receptacles, while allowing the book to be opened in the usual manner.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view o'f a pocket-book embodying the principles of my invention with the book closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the book open; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale, taken on the line w or of Fig. 2.

The pocket-book is formed in the usual manner with the two flaps A and B, one of which is adapted to be folded over upon the other and fastened by a snap-catch or in any other well-known manner.

Between the parts A and B are arranged the extensible money pockets or receptacles C, the folded edges of which 0 c are exposed between the flaps A and B. It is to prevent the loss of money or other articles from the pockets C through the open ends of the book between the portions A and B either by slipping out over the top of the pockets 0 or by passing through the edges 0, should the latter become torn or worn, that my invention is primarily intended.

D are guards carried by the main body of the pocket-book and extending over its open or exposed ends between the portions A and B, forming closed ends to the pocket-book when the latter is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus protecting the edges 0 of the money pockets or receptacles C. These end guards D do not in any way interfere with the opening of the book to expand themoney-pockets C in the usual manner, and when the pocketbook is closed they completely close the ends between the parts A and B. These guards D are preferably constructed of metal covered with leather the same as that of which the book is constructed and are preferably secured to the main body of the book at the edge of one of the parts A or B by means of flanges (Z, which fit under the outer portion of the leather, so as to be hidden from view, and are secured thereto by means of rivets or in anyother convenient and well-known man ner. These end guards D, while rendering the pocket-book more serviceable, impart to it a more eflective appearance.

Vhile I prefer the mere details of 0011- struction which are here shown, I do not limit myself to them, as it is apparent that they may be modified without departing from the invention.

What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pocket-book having a series of expansible compartments, an outer covering, and end guard-pieces arranged between the edges of said outer covering and extending over and covering the edges of said expansible compartments when the pocket-book is closed, but permitting the expansion of said C0111- partments beyond the end pieces in opening or expanding the pocket-book.

2. A pocket-book having the adjacent side edges of its outer portion separate one from the other and provided with guards carried by one of said adjacent side edges and extending toward the other to close the space between said edges.

'4. A pocket-book having a central compartment, a series of expansible money-0on1- partrnents adjacent thereto, and end-guard pieces of greater width than the Width of said central compartment arranged on the ends of the pocket-hook between the edges of the outer covering and extending over the edges of said expansible money-compartments, so 10 as to completely close the ends of the pocketbook.
