Be it known that I, EDWARD S. RAFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in an article of manufacture; and itconsistsin providing in an inkstand a fountain or receptacle to hold ink, that maybe so balanced or poised as to yield or swing when the pen is placed in the stand, which movement will cause a supply of ink to flow from the body of the fountain to the pen and back into the fountain when the pen is removed, by which a supply of fresh ink is always provided for the pen and the whole body of ink in the fountain moved each time the pen is inked, by which movement the ink is prevented from settling, and as a result of such frequent movement is always in order for use.

Nith these ends in view my invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

A is the base, which may be made of any suitable material, having side frames 13 and at the top portion of said frames a cross-bar G.

A fountain or ink-holder D, preferably made of glass, is provided, having a hollow body portion a, a neck portion b, projected outwardly and upward, about the upper end portion of which is provided a screw-thread c, and on the top portion of the body D is provided a flanged aperture (1, to which is fitted a metal cap f. On the top and side portions of the inkfountain D and diametrically opposite are provided bails F, having on their under side portion corresponding notches p. The bar 0 is passed through the bails and into the perforations provided at the top of the side frames B, the bails to rest 011 the bar to support the fountain in a swinging position, and the bar in corresponding notches.

To arrest the downward movement of the front portion of the fountain, a stop Gis provided, consisting of a button-headed screw, to be turned into orout of the base A, the head to stand at the desired height to arrest the downward movement of the fountain.

In operation a suflicient amount of ink is passed through the aperture provided therefor into the fountain to immerse or cover the end of the tube n to a point indicated by the dotted line, the swing or tip of the fountain to be regulated by moving the suspendingbails forward and back over the supportingbar C,the bar to rest in corresponding notches, and thus adjust or regulate the swing of the fountain to the amount of ink therein, so as to prevent an excess rising through the tube a, and by keeping the end of said tube constantly immersed air-bubbles rising above the tube into the mouth E will be prevented, and by the swinging movement of the fountain the ink is not liable to settle, as in the case with a stationary fountain or one that is not so moved at every inking of the pen. To ink the pen it is placed in the mouth E, and bya gentle downward pressure the fountain will swing about the bar 0, the front portion down and the rear portion up, at which instant ink will flow from the fountain up through the tube 02. into the mouth E, and when the pen has been inked and removed the fountain will swing back into its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
