Description

(No Model.)
J. H. CHASE & J. B. TRACY.
ORGAN.
No. 445,044. Pa/manted Jan. 20, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HERBERT CHASE AND JAMES TRACY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTI- OUT, ASSIGNORS TO THE AEOLIAN ORGAN AND MUSIC COMPANY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
ORGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4%5,044, dated January 20, 189;1.
Application filed October 14, 1889. Serial No. 327,039. (No model.)
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH HERBERT CHAsE and JAMEs l TRACY, both of Meri- .1, in the county of New Haven and State 0 Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Organs, of which the following is a specification.
\Ve will describe parts of an organ embodying our improvement, and then point out the novel features in the claims.
The figure in the accompanying drawing is atransverse vertical section of a portion of an organ embodying our improvement.
A designates the reed-board. B designates a number of valves corresponding to the nu inber of reed cells. These valves are shown as consisting of strips of wood guided by pins a and faced with any suitable soft material.
. They are shown as arranged in a chamber or space C, which may be a wind-chest combined with any suitable bellows. These valves are raised to their seats by springs D and are lowered through pins E. The pins, it will be seen, pass through the reed-board A, and are also guided by fitting in a rail F. These pins extend to the top surface near the center of the valves B. The springs D are shown as consisting of wires secured at one end to a stationary part of the instrument and at the other to the valves in line with the pins E, so as to force them upward and close them.
G designates one ofa number of levers. These levers will in number corresp nd with the pinsEand valves B. They are fulcruined at the forward end to a rail or other support H. At the rear end they extend over the pins E. Pins g, extending from a rail F, guide these levers G.
I designates the keys, of which there will be a number corresponding to the number of levers G and valves B. These keys are fulcrumed at the rear ends to pins t', extending from the key-board J, and are guided near the forward ends by pins i, extending from the key-board.
K designates adjustable buttons or screws fitted in the levers G and having appendages K, which extend beneath the keys. lVhen the keys are depressed, their corresponding levers G will be depressed. Thus the valves B will be opened and the corresponding reeds will be caused to speak.
It will be observed that the key-board is not arranged directly above the reed-board, but is considerably forward of the reed-board, and that the adjustable buttons or screws K are readily accessible from the front of the keys beneath the key-board. It will also be observed that there is a very narrow cheek projection, and that the wind-chest is arranged below and in the rear of the cheek projections. This form of action which we have illustrated allows of the quicker and cleaner opening of the valves. Moreover, in it the key-board does not obstruct the free tone of the reeds as much as ordinarily.
\Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an organ-action, the combination, with a reed-board, of valves, levers G, pins at the end of said levers extending to the valves near their center, springs engaging with the valves in line with the pins, keys above and forward of the valves, and adjusting-screws between the levers and keys, accessible below the keyboard in front of the valves, substantially as specified.
2. In an organ-action, the combination of the narrow cheek projections, the wind-chest below and in the rear of the cheek projec- 8o tions, the keys above said check projections, reed-valves below the keys, and connections between the keys and valves, consisting of levers G, pins E, and buttons orscrews attached to the levers and accessible from the front below the keys, substantially as specified.
