Description
G. L. WITSIL.
Churn.
Patented Sept. 27, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. WITSIL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHURN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,480, dated September 27, 1864.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. WITsIL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Mixing and Agitatin g Substances; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. My invention consists of mechanism, fully described hereinafter, for effecting a violent agitation and thorough admixture of iiuids.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification--v Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus for mixing and agitating substances, and Fig. 2 a plan view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both views.
To the base A ofthe appara-tus is secured an upright, B, slotted at the upper end for the reception of a lever, G, which vibrates on a pin, a. The front end of the lever G is forked, a'id through each of the prongs projects one ot1 the journals a of a vibrating block, D, in the center of which is an opening, for a purpose described hereinafter.
Directly below the forked end ot' the lever 0 is a wooden tank or vessel, D', similar in shape to those used in what are known as dashchurns77 In the lower edge of the vessel is a dovetailed recess adapted to receive a projection, c, on the edgeof the base A, the vessel being maintained `firmly in its position on the base and against the projection by a screw, d, which passes through the up right B and bears against the side ofthe vessel.
The upper end ot' the vessel is closed by a cap, E, and through an opening in the center of the latter passes a rod on which is a spiral projection, c, a groove, j", in the side ofthe opening in the cap, through which the rod passes, being adapted for the reception of the spiral projection e. The upper end of the rod F is contracted in diameter, and around this contracted portion ts loosely a collar7 H,
which is retained on the-rod by a button, 1 on the top of the same. The collar H passes through the opening in the block D, where it is secured by a set-screw b. At the lower end of the rod F is a plunger, G, consisting of a cruciform block or dasher, j", to the upper side of which are secured at right angles to each other four vanes or paddles, y, and in the center ofeach of the latter is an opening, t'.
The cap E is secured in its position and prevented from turning by a pin, e, which projects through the cap into an opening in the edge ofthe vessel.
The fluid to be agitated, having been deposited in the vessel D, the lever C is vibrated so as to impart a reciprocating vertical motion to the rod F and its plunger G. Simultaneously with the vertical motion of the rod F, a revolving motion is imparted to it and to the plunger by the action ofthe spiral projection e as it passes through the groovefin the cap, the iiuids in the vessel being thus stirred and beaten by the paddles, while they are thrown from side to side by the action of the the dasher. These combined movements given vto the rod and its plunger render an apparatus of the above description very effective, and especially serviceable in churning, where it is desirable to violently agitate and produce a thorough admixture ofthe contents of the vessel.
I do not desire to claim the rod F with its spiral projection c, as such a device has been heretofore used for imparting a combined rotary and reciprocating' motion to the dasher of a churn; but- I claim as my invention and desire to secuie by Letters Patent- Y y The upright or standard B, the slotted lever C, its vibrating collar or sleeve H, in combination with the rod F, its spiral projection e, and plunger G, the whole being constructed and arranged for joint action as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
` GEO. L. WITSIL. Witnesses CHARLES O. Fosrnn, JOHN WHITE.
