ELECTRIC ANNUNCIATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,245, dated January 6,1891.
Application filed July 29, 1890. Serial No. 360,297. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST HORMEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Annunciators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved e1ectric annunciator for hotels and dwellinghouses; and the invention consists of an annunciator having a pivoted elbow-lever, which,
when the same is released from an armature by an electric current, drops and shows the number-plate. By means of a lifting-lever the elbow-lever is then replaced in its former position. I attain theseobjects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved'annunciator, and Fig. 2 is a side View of the same.

A in the drawings represents a metallic Q- shaped frame having outwardly extending shanks A and A which is riveted or otherwise secured to the back wall of the annunciator-oase. An electro-magnet B is attached to the upper shank A of the frame A, and to the under side of the lower shank A an elbow-lever O is pivoted, which elbow-lever has an aperture 0, and on its free end a clamp o for holding the number-plate.
To the inside of the back part of the frame A an armature-arm D is pivoted,which armature-arm has on its free end a knob or hook d. When the armature is in its normal position,the free end of the same projects through the aperture of the elbow-lever C and holds the said lever in an upright position by means of the knob or hook d, the armature resting on the lower part of the border of the said aperture, and the knob or hook cl engaging the outer rim of the said aperture, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
E is a lifting-lever of wire, having upwardly bent arms 6, which arms are hinged to the back wall of the annunciator-case. The end of one arm c projects through one of the side walls of the annunciator-case and terminates in a cranlcarm 6 When the cranloarm is turned upward, the lifting-lever is also moved in the same direction, so that the lower part (2 of the lifting-lever strikes the elbow-lever O. The wire ends of the electro-magnet are connected with an electric battery in such a manner that the electric current is closed by means of a suitable switch or push button, (not shown in the drawings,) as generally used in annunciators of this class.
My improved annuncia-tor operates in the following manner: As soon as the electric circuit is closed by the push-button, as aforesaid the core in the electro-magnet becomes magnetic and the armature D is attracted by the core. The elbow-lever C is thereby released from the knob or hook d of the armature and drops into a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the number-plate, fastened to the clamp on the free end of the elbow-lever, is shown. The pivoted end of the elbow-lever is rounded off, so that the turning of the same on its pivot-pin is allowed. The elbow-lever O is so pivoted to the shank A of the frame A that the exterior end 0 of the rounded-off portion of the elbow-lever abuts against the lower side of the said shank A ,whereby the elbow-lever is keptin a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the electric circuit is broken, the armature is released from the core of the electro-magnet and rests on the shank A To bring the elbow-lever into its former position the crankarm 6 is turned upward and the lifting-lever strikes against the elbow-lever, so that the latter is raised and the lower part of the border of the aperture 0 is pushed against the knob or hook of the armature. As soon as the aperture of the elbow-lever has passed the knob on the end of the armature the elbowlever is caught by the said knob and kept in an upright position, as the knobwill abut against the outside of the lower border of the aperture in the elbow-lever, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an electric tl1l1L111Ci2ttOl,l1l1O combina tion of a G-shaped frame, with an electrO magnet fastened to the upper shank, an armature pivoted to the back part, and an elbow-lever pivoted to the lower shank of said knob or hook of the armature, and a liftinglever by which the elbow-lever is lifted when the same is released from the armature and in horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
