Description

(No Model.)
J. W. PLAIN.
URINAL. Patented Jan.6,1891.
W/M jZZZZ @Mee 00% %/d All JARED IV. PLAIN,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
URlNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,074, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed March 18, 1890. Serial No. 344,403. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JARED IV. PLAIN,-of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencev being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to urinals, and has for its object to provide a urinal that shall have a provision structurally for preventing the usual conductivity of sound when being used.
It is often a matter of embarrassment in usinga urinal that the sound is conducted from the apartment to the ears of occupants of adjoining rooms.
Myinvention consists in forming orarranging a deflector-column within the urinal for deflecting the urine and thereby lessening the sound.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a urinal constructed in accordance with my invention, the deflector-column being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. of the same.
A designates a urinal of the usual form, having a deflector-column B, preferably central of and formed integral therewith for economy of construction; but, as will be evident, the deflector-column may be constructed as an article of manufacture, to be placed into the urinal with the base resting upon the bottom of the urinal, as shown in dotted lines,
Fig. 2. Deflector-column B is preferably formed rounded at its upper end and of a graduallydecreasing circumference toward the base, thereby lessening the conductivity of sound and adding to the space within the urinal. The deflector-column when formed separately from the u rinal affords less obstruction to cleansing the same, by reason of its adaptability to be removed during this operation, and also it can be purchased as an article of manufacture to be used in urinals in present use; but ordinarily I prefer to form it as an integral part of the urinal as being more compact, and less liable to effect the fracture of the urinal by contact therewith. To avoid this difficulty, however, I may form the deflector-column separate, as stated, and
secure the same within the urinal by cement or otherwise.
What I claim is a 1. The combination, with a urinal, of a deflector-column arranged vertically therein,
the said column having a rounded upper end and decreasing in circumference toward its base, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a de Hectorcolumn for urinals, the said column having a base and a rounded upper end and gradually
