B. HEINRICH.
COMBINED MATCH BOX AND CIGAR PUNCH.
No. 443,942. Patented Dec. 30, 1890.
UNITED STATES EMIL HEINRICH, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO Gr. J. CROSMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,942, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed August 2,1890. Serial No. 360,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL HEINRICH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Gigar-Punchers; and I do doclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combined match -safes and cigar punches or cutters; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter disclosed.
In the drawings, A refers to the match-safe, in its general outline of the usual construction, having a hinged cover a, held down upon the upper end of the safe by a flat springcatch 1), riveted to the latter and engaging at its upper end a thickened inner beveled projecting port-ion c of the cover bearing upon a correspondingly-beveled edge of the safe. The spring-catch b has projecting outward from it through the safe A a push button or stud Z) for its operation.
In anarrow compartment A of the safe A is arranged the punch orcutter B, supported near its upper end in a bracket d, projecting from the safe near its upper end and having its lower flattened end extending down into a tapering or funnel-shaped chamber 0, projecting from the innerside of the safe inward and designed to receive the small end of a cigar, an aperture 'rbeing provided in the upper side of said chamber for the passage of said punch or cutter, and a coincident aperture being provided in the bottom of said chamber to provide for forcing the punchedout portion of the cigar below and out of said chamber, and also to prevent the cutter from becoming dulled by contact with the metal. The clippings of the cigar, forced down through said aperture into the chamber be low, may be removed by opening the cover and inverting the box or safe.
Surrounding the stem of the punch or cut-- ter B is a coiled or helical spring 6, normally pressing upward upon the latter, its lower end being confined on a collar or sleeve f, formed on the chamber 0 around the opening therein through which the punch or cutter passes, the upper end of said spring being confined by a cross-pin f, passed through said stem.
It will be noticed that the cover a in its clasped position presses upon the upper knob end of the stein of the punch, depressing the latter and compressing the spring surrounding it, whereby as the cover is unclasped it will be automatically thrown or spring open. The unclasping of the cover, it is obvious, is effected by pressing inward with the finger or thumb upon the button or stud b.
The opening of the safe A permits the actuation of the punch or cutter to provide for punching a vertical perforation in the tapering portion of the cigar, previously introduced into the funnel-shaped chamberC, and then the taking of a match from the safe, provision for the ignition of which is made by making the outside of the safe with a roughened or grated surface, as at g, for the lighting of a match, all in a continuous operation.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combined match-safe and punch or cutter consisting of the receptacle having an inwardly-projecting funnel-shaped or tapering chamber provided with upper and lower coincident apertures, and the inclosed springpressed punch or cutter having its lower end extending into said chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combined match-safe and punch or cutter consisting of the receptacle having upon its inside the funnel-shaped or tapering chamber provided with upper and lower coincident apertures, the spring-pressed punch or cutter having its lower end extending into said chamber, and the hinged cover pressing on said punch and havinga spring-clasp connection with said safe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL HEINRICH.
