SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,917, dated December 30, 1890.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS JONCAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pressing Gore-Seams for Congress-Shoe Uppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the manufacture of uppers for Congress boots, so called. In the manufacture of these uppers the elastic gores are glued or pasted to the adjusting parts of the upper, the leather being turned or folded over to form a fiat seam or joint previous to being stitched. This is done by applying paste to the edges, placing the gore, the lining, and the leather portion of the upper in proper position, and then pressing the same by applying thereto a weight until the paste adheres. The uppers are then removed and weights are placed upon the seams for alimited length of time until they have become dry enough to remain in place.
My invention has for its object the construction of a simple and effective machine for retaining the gores in place during the operation of cementing and for compressing the seams after the same have been cemented by the use of a heavy mechanical pressure.
The several parts of my device as I have herein shown it are a fiat base or table, a pair of properly-formed pressing-levers pivoted at one end to said base, and a link and eccentric for pressing the opposite end toward said table.
Means are provided for the adjustment of the several parts to exert a greater or less pressure upon the same or to provide for varying thicknesses.
My invention in the form in which I prefer to embody it is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figurel is aplan ortop view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through x w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation; Fig. 4, a view of the upper as fitted for being placed in my machine.
The base rests upon suitable legs or supports a, and is here shown as hollow with a flat upper surface. If desired, steam maybe admitted into the hollow base. (Not here illustrated.)
To one end of the base A are adjustably screwed two brackets bby means of the bolts 11', passing through vertical slots h The lower end of the bracket 1) extends beneath the bed A, and an adj usting-screw b passes up through this portion and impinges on the under side of the bed A. The height of the bracket 1) is thus regulated by the screw b Pivoted to lugs on the upper end of the bracket b, are two pressing-levers B, which extend theentire length of the bed or base A. These levers are tapering in form and are of such size and relative position that they will press uniformly on the seams of both gores in the upper when the latter is placed beneath them.
On the free end of each of the levers B and eXt-endin g somewhat beyond the end is an adjusting-arm O, pivoted to a lug c on the top of the pressing-lever B.
Means are provided for sustaining the adjusting-arm O at varying heights, here shown as adj Listing-screws c and 0 one of which passes through the leverB and the adj ustingarm 0, and the other passes through the adjusting arm G and impinges on the top of the lever-arm B. Means are also provided for forcing down the free ends of the pressinglevers B, as hereinafter shown. The extreme end of the adj usting-arm O is bifurcated, and in the top of each bifurcation is a notch 0 in which fits the cross-head (Z, attached to the upper end of the link D. The lower end of link D is pivoted to an eccentric e, by which it is forced downward. An arbor E, journaled in bearings, connects the two eccentrics e. A lever e is provided for turning the arborE to raise and lower said links. The two links D D are connected by means of a connecting-rod e, which extends from one to the other.

The operation of my device is evident from its construction. When it is desired to press the seams of the gore, the two pressing-levers B are raised or tilted back, the links having been released from their ends and tilted forward. The upper is then placed in position on the bed A, the gore-seams lying substantially parallel with the edges of the pressinglevers B. The levers are then lowered to rest upon the gore-seams, and the links 1) are raised by means of the lever (2 the crossheads made to engage the notches c, and they are then forced downward by the lever (2 holding the uppers in place and exerting a heavy pressure upon the gore-seams 71.. When the seams have been sufficiently pressed and the glue or paste suitieiently hardened, the link I) is released from the end of the arm the messing-levers raised, and the upper re moved.
It will be seen that my device can be quickly operated and that itmaybe readily adjusted for varying thickness of uppers and varying degrees of pressure, as desired.
The gore-semns formed by the use of my machine are more firm, compact, and flat than those hitherto formed by use of ordinary weights.
I claim- 1. In a device for pressing gore-seams of boots and shoes, the combination of a bed or table, a pressing-lever pivoted by one end thereto and having its lower face substantially parallel with the said bed when resting on the seam to be pressed, a latch or link adapted to be engaged and disengaged from the free end of the lever, and an eccentric .t'or depressing said link, substantially as described.
2. In a device for pressing the gore-seams of boots and shoes, the combination of a bed or table, a pressing-lever pivoted to one end of the same, an adjusting-arm pivoted to said lever and adapted to be held in various positions, and means for applying, force to said. adjusting-arm to depress said lever, substantially as described.

In a device for pressing gore-seams oi? shoes, the combination of a base or table, a pressi ng-lever for pressi up; the gore-seam pivoted by one end thereto, an adjusting-arm pivoted on the top of said lever and havingits free end extending beyond the end of said lever, a link for engaging the free end of said adjusting-arm, an eccentric to which said link is pivoted, and a lever for rotating said eeeeutrics to raise and lower said link, substantially as shown.
