LEATHER-FINISHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,896, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed June 17, 1890- Serial No. 355,723. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, BERNARD D. CHALK- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leather Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, and efiicient machine which is specially organized to be operated at will for boarding, corrugating, embossing, 11ammering, or pebblingleather, wherebyany one of the operations mentioned iselfected by mechanical contrivances to reduce the manual labor and number of machines usually required for the same purpose.
To accomplish this object my invention involves the features of construction, the combination or arrangement of devices, and the principles of operation hereinafter described in detail, and specified in the claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a leatherfinishing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the lines; 00, Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sectional views of different forms of finishing face-plates adapted to the reciprocating plunger; Fig.7, a sectional view ofa faceplate, showing a modification of the devices for attaching it to the plunger.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention,1 willnow describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The numerals 1 indicate the side standards,
and 2 and 3 horizontal brackets extending inopposite directions from the standards and respectively supporting the delivery-table at and the receiving-table 5. A horizontal plate or bar 6 connects the side standards below the plane of the tables and serves as a support for spiral or other suitable springs 7, on the upper ends of which rests a yielding bedplate 8, which normally stands with its top surface approximately flush with the upper sides of the delivery and receiving tables. The bed-plate is preferably provided with pendent rods extending through the springs to sustain the latter in correct position. I have exhibited a pair of springs and a pair of pendent rods; but obviously the number thereof may be varied.
The side standards are provided on their inner sides with vertical guideways 9, receiving slide-blocks 10 on the ends of a horizontal plunger or cross-head 12, having pitman-connections 13 with a triple crank-shaft 14, journaled in the standards and having a drive wheel or pulley 15, which can be revolved by belt-connection with a suitable engine, such as a steam, electric, or hydraulic motor. The drive-shaft comprises two cranks 16, to which the pitmen 13 are connected, and an end crank 17, to which is connected one end of alink 18, having its lower end pivoted to a lever 19, loosely hung, as at 20, on the shaft of one of the feed- rollers 21 and 22 and carrying a spring-pawl 23, which engages a ratchet-wheel 24: on the feed-roller 21, that supports the pawl-carrying lever in such manner that as the'triple crank-shaft revolves and reciprocates the plungerthe ratchet-wheel and feedrollers are intermittently rotated. The feedroller 22 is adapted to yield, and for this purpose its journals rest against half-boxes 2t, acted upon by springs 25, the object being to positively feed the leather between the plunger and the yielding bed-plate and. to accommodate leather of varying thickness. The plunger carries onits lower side a removable face-plate 26, which is prepared to operate on the leather according to the conditions required. A single face-plate cannot be utilized for the several operations desired, and hence I provide a series of interchangeable face-plates, each having its acting face pre pared to attain the desired end. The faceplates can be detachably connected with the plunger by a dovetailed gib or tongue 27 in one part entering a dovetailed groove 28 in the other part, or the face-plate could be pro- 1 and 3, while the pebbliug-plate may be roughened, as in Fig. 4:. A plate for corrugating leather may be shaped as in Fig. 5, and an embossing or ornamenting plate may be formed as in Fig. 6, with the ornamentation in relief as is ordinarily practiced in embossing fabrics. The bed-plate should also be provided with a detachable face the same as the plunger, whereby interchangeable faces can be used on the bed-plate, as described with reference to the plunger.
In operation the single drive-shaft is revolved and operates to reciprocate the plunger and act on the leather which is supported by the yielding bed'plate, and at each ascent of the plunger the leather is advanced the correct distance by the feed -rollers through the medium of the link, the pawlcarrying lever, and the ratchet-wheel. The delivery-table is provided with a rollingsupport 3t to facilitate the movement of the leather.
In treating fine leathers the bed plate should yield slightly under the influence of pressure exerted by the plunger; but for operating on other grades of leather or for the boarding and hammering steps the bed-plate should be rigid or stand immovable. To accomplish this I provide means for locking the bed-plate immovable at will, which can be effected through the medium of a screw-jack 32, ofany desired construction, fastened to the spring-supporting plate or bar 6 and capable of adjustment to sustain and hold the bedplate in dependent of the sprin The leather can thus be hammered or otherwise acted upon while the bed-plate is rigid or stationary.
The invention provides a single machine which can be utilzed at will for hammering or boarding, corrugating, embossing, pebbling, and like operations, and reduces in a large measure the labor and expense usually incident to these several operations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a leather-finishing machine, the combination of the crank-shaft, the plunger carrying a face-plate and reciprocated by crank connections With the shaft, the feed-rollers intermittently rotated by a paWl-and-ratchet connection with a crank of the shaft, and the yielding bed-plate for supporting the leather, substantially as described.
5% In a leather-finishing machine, the combination of the triple crank-shaft, the plunger connected with a pair of the cranks and carrying a face-plate, the feed-roller having a ratchet-wheel, a pawl-carrying lever connected with the remaining crank of the shaft, and the yielding bed -plate for supporting the leather, substantially as described.
In a leatl'ier-finishing machine, the combination of a crank-shaft, a plunger carrying a face-plate and reciprocated by the shaft, the feed rollers intermittently rotated by the shaft, the spring yielding bed plate, and means for locking the bed-plate immovable or rigidly at will, substantially as described.
at. In a leather-finishing machine, the combination, with a crank-shaft and a plunger rcciprocated by the shaft, of a removable faceplate carried by the plunger, means for detachably connecting the face-plate to the plunger, the feed'rolls intermittently rotated by the crank-shaft, a yielding bedplate for the leather, and a device below the bed-plate for locking the latter immovable or rigid at the will of the operator, substantially as described.
5. A leather-finishing machine consisting of a reciprocating plunger having a dovetailed recess, the interchangeable dovetailed face -plates for hammering, pebbling, and embossing leather, intermittently-rotating feed-rolls, one of which carries a ratchetwheel, a crank-shaft which reciprocates the plunger, a pawl-carrying lever mounted on a crank of the shaft and having its pawl engaging the ratchetwvheel on the feed-roller for intermittently rotating the latter as the crank-shaft rotates, and the yielding bedplate for supporting the leather, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD D. CHALKLEY.
