, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL SNYDER, OF SPARTA, MICHIGAN.
DRAWING-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,874, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed August 13, 1890. Serial No. 361,873. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL SNYDEE, of Sparta, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to Inake and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form partof this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in drawing-knives; and it consists in the combination and construction of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a double-edged knife which can be revolved in its frame or bearing, and thus bring either of its edges into play, as may be desired.
Figure l represents a perspective of a drawing-knife to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
A represents a suitable metallic frame, which is preferably bent or curved near each end, and which has a handle B secured to each of its ends, as shown. This frame is very light and has its outer upper edge bev-v eled away at C, so that the shavings can pass over the frame Without clogging, and thus interfere with the operation of the knife. The knifeor blade D is made double-edged, as shown, and is journaled in the frame A at each end, and is provided upon its ends where they extend through the frameA with knobs, handles, or other suitable devices G, for the purpose of revolving the knife and thus bring either of its edges into use. There is a ratchet formed upon each end of the knife, and preferably inside of the ends of the frame A, and pivoted to the frame A are suitable paWls I, which en gage with the ratchet to prevent the knife from revolving while in use. These ratchets allow the knife to be revolved by hand, so as to bring the opposite edge of the knife into use; but they do not allow the knife to revolve While in use.
By the construction herein shown and described the blade can be revolved so as to bring either edge into position for use and at any desired angle to the handles, according to the kind of Work being done.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a drawing-knife, the` combination of the frame, a double-edged knife journaled therein and having a ratchet, and a pawl for engaging the ratchet for preventing it from revolving while in use, substantially as described.
2. In a drawing-knife, the combination of a frame, a double-edged knife journaled therein and having its end projecting through the frame for revolving it, and a holding device for preventing it from revolving, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EMANUEL SNYDER. Witnesses:
