SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 443,808, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed December 16, 1889- Serial No. 334,001. (No model.)
T0 to whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. \VILGUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Petroleum- Burners for Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved petroleum-burner arranged as when applied in the furnace of alocomotive-boiler. This figure will be fully understood by those skilled in the art, and is shown to illustrate the manner of connecting the steam and oil pipes. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of such burner with the inductionconduits broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view of the burner shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken at line pg of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken at line w on.
My improved petroleum-burner is adapted for use with either horizontal, vertical, locomotive, or Hazleton steam-boilers.
A primary object of my burner is to reduce the oil or petroleum to a gaseous condition; also, to prevent the oil from being mixed with the steam while being forced through their conduits.
My invention comprises the combination of the outer steam-pipe A, having the forwardly-projecting lip L, the longitudinallyperforated internal collar .8 near the end, and the annular chamber D in front of such collar, the internal oil-pipe O, forced or screwed into the rear end of such collar, and the radiallyperforated burner or oil tip or shield E, provided with the tubular stem F, which is inserted into the front end of the collar B and secured by the set-screw S, which allows of the adjustment and removal of the burnertip structed for various conditions of use. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4:, and 5 the burner is designed to throw an upwardlyprojected flame and also a forwardly=pro jected flame. the tubular stem of the burner-tip which connects with the oil-pipe O, and beneath these end perforations I provide a transverse slot or passage H, which communicates with the annular chamber D in front ofcollar B, and
.into which chamber the longitudinal perforations J through the collar open from steampipe A. This slot is formed by so constructing and arranging the burner-tip with relation to the lip as to leave a space between the lower side of the tip and the upper face of the lip L, which projects forward from the lower side of the front end of the steam-pipe. The steam escapes from the steam-pipe through perforations J into annular chamber D, and thence laterally through a space M left between the burner-tip and the end of the steampipe above the lip, thus producing a radial jet of steam just to the rear of the radial holes of the burner-tip. The oil is subjected to sufficient pressure to cause a flow of oil from the radial perforations K. The oil is not subjected to a blast from the steam, but is carried outward from the burner by frictional contact and is mingled with the steam and consumes in a clear and effective flame, the
effects of which are not injurious to the boiler or furnace. hen the burner is designed for use under horizontal boilers, the end holes G and slot II are employed, and the oil flows from the holes G as well as from the radial holes K, and is caught by the horizontal sheet of steam which issues from slot H and is carried along under the boiler, where it is consumed.
It will be understood that in practice the oil is introduced into the internal oil-pipe through the oil-feed pipe 0', and that the steam is introduced into the outer steam-pipe A through the steam-feed pipe A.
The valve V is designed to admit steam into feed oil pipe 0 whenever it is desired to cleanse it by blowing out the accretions which may collect from the oil.
The operation of my burner is essentially different from those heretofore made, in that the oil is delivered into the furnace immedi= ately in front of a fan-shaped or radiate jet of steam, which does not come into contact with the oil until both have issued from the burner. The oil is not blown from the burner,
and therefore the flame is not so destructive to the furnace and burner as with other burners.
The gist. of my invention lies in the construction which produces this operation, and I desire to secure broadly, the combination, in an oil-burner, of a steam pipe, an oil-pipe within such steam-pipe, and the oil-tip con sisting of a shield E, extending across in front of the mouth of the steam'pipe to form with the end of the steam-pipe a radiate steamdischarg'e passage from the interior of the steam-pipe at right angles to the axis of such pipe and provided with the oil-tube I communicating; with the oil-pipe, and also providedwith the oil-passages K, communicating with the oil'tube and opening at the periphery of the shield in front of the radiate steam-passage M out of the path of the steamdiseharge. It is obvious that this principle of construction can be carried out without providing a passage between the lip of the steanrpipe and the lower side of the tip, and it is not absolutel essential for such construction that there be any such lip, and 1' do not desire to be limited to such construction.
Now having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An oil-burner comprising the con'ibination of a steam-pipe, an oil-pipe within such steam-pipe, and the oil-tip consisting of a shield extending across in front of the mouth of the steanrpipe to form with the end of the steam-pipe a radiate steam-discharge passage from the interior of the-steam-pipe at right angles to the axis of such pipe and provided with the oil-tube F, communicating with the oil-pipe, and also provided with the oil-passages K, communicating with the oil-tnbe and opening at the periphery of the shield in front of the radiate steam-passage M out of the path of the steam-discharge.
2. The combination ofthe outer steam-pipe having the forwardly-projeeting lip and the longitudinally-perforated internal collar, the internal oil pipe, the radiallyperforated burner-tip provided with the tubular stem and with the end holes and so arranged with relation to the lip as to leave a space between the lower side of the tip and the upperface of the lip.

The burner comprising the combination of the oil-pipe, the steam-pipe having on its lowerside the lip projecting forward beyond the upper main face of the end of such pipe, and the radially-perforated oiLti p arranged above such lip to form astcam-passage between the lip and the lower side of the tip.
