To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented new'and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention consists in certain improvement-s in sewingnnachines whereby the feed and tension maybe simultaneously regulated, 1n a manner and for the purpose as will hereinafter be set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a side view of a sewing-machine containing iny improvement, partly in section, the latter being shown by broken lines; Fig. 2, end view, partly in section, showing feed and lever for changing throw of feed; Fig. 3, thread-tension device in section, together with line of connection to. rock-shaft; Fig. 4, side view, partly in section, disclosing to view lever-connections; Fig.'5, broken detail, showing end of rock-shaft and arm. Fig. U represents a vertical sectional view of a section of driving-shaft, can, eccentric-strap, connecting-rod, and crank-pin. Fig. 7 represents a longitudinal sectional view through the bed-plate and mechanism supported beieath the same, band-wheel, &c., shown in lig. l.
The form and style of machine to which I have applied my improvements is that known as the Willcox d: Gibbs, although it is obvious that it is equally applicable to other styles.
In the drawings, A represents the clothplate of the sewing-machine. B is the arm of the same.
C is the drivin g-shaft, provided at its rear end with a cam or eccentric located thereon. (More clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 6.)
D is the feeding device.
F is a rock-shaft arranged parallel with the driving-shaft beneath the cloth-plate of the machine, and is provided at its frontend with an arm F, having a pin or other projection supporting a roller f thereon, which engages on slides within a slot or opening in one side of a connecting-rod E at one end thereof. (More clearly shown in Fig. i.) The said connecting-rod E at its opposite end is pivotally connected to the feeding device at d and serves to vary the throw of the feed-dog, and thereby the length of stitch, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
E is a stitch-regulating cam-lever, pivotally secured to the frame beneath the clothplate of the machine, as shown in Figs. 2 and and 4, provided with a pin or other projection supporting a roller thereon adapted to slide or operate within a slot or opening located in the said connecting-rod E on the side opposite the slot or opening before referred to therein. (See Fig. 4.)
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be readily observed that by shifting the handle of the stitch-regulating cam-lever E up or down it changes the position of the roller f in the groove on theV opposite side of the lever E, thereby making a greater or less throw to the feed when the rock-shaft F and eccentric-strap J are operated by the cam C on the drivingshaft- G is a reciproca-tory vertically-operating connecting-rod operated by the said cam or eccentric C', located on the said driving-shaft C,which serves to automatically raise the upper part or plate of the th read-tension device, represented at H, as will be hereinafter described. The said rock -shaft F is provided at its rear end, or that end adjacent to the band-wheel, with an arm F, having a slot or groove therein. (More clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.) The connecting-rod is provided with an eccentric-strap J, located Within an opening in the lower extremity ol' said connecting rod and provided with a crank-pin f', having a roller thereon (see Fig. 6) adapted to operate in the slot or opening in the arm located at the end of the rock-shaft F. (See Fig. 3.) One side of the end of the said vertical connecting-rod G is cut away (see Figs. 3 and (i) to allow a slight vibration and adjustment of said eccentric-strap. The cani or eccentric on the driving-shaft operates or revolves within an opening in the said eccentric-strap, which operates the vertical connectii'ig-rod G and gives the same an rip-anddown motion, and at the saine time oscillates the rock-shaft through the medium of the eccentric-strap J and crank-pin on said eccentric -strap operating in the slot in the fixed arm on said rock-shaft.
The tension device proper (represented at ICO ll in liig. 3 of the drawings) consists ot the lower lixed plate and the upper plate, the lat ter adapted to be raised and lowered with the action of the vertical connecting-rod G. .Between said plates or surfaces the upper thread from the spool is passed to the needle.
rlhe operation of my improved device is as follows: The thread from the spool is passed between the two impinging plates of tension device II toward the needle-bar and downward to and through the needle-eye in the usual manner. AUniformity ot pressure upon threads of varied sizes is secured by means of the continuous connection ol. the several parts hereinbefore described. ly moving the cam-lever l for determining the length of stitch, the connecting-rod E is moved, thereby varying the length ot" stitch or throw ot' the feed-dog, and at the same time moving the rock-shaft lt by reason of its crank-pin connection with the said connecting-rod l1). The said movement or adjustmentof the rock-shaft by the cam-lever E', as described, alters the position ot' the slotted arm located ou the opposite end ot said shaft, which in turn moves the eccentric-strap which forms the bearing for the vertical connectingrod G, thereby adjusting the position and movement of? the same. The movement or adj ustinent of the eccentriestrap as described varies the space between the plates forming the tension device, and when the desired adjustment is made for the length ot stitch usual for a certain size or number of thread the tension is determ ined simultaneously with it, and any change ot' stitch changes the tension device at the same time. rlhe rock-shaft is operated by the action of the crank-pin f on the eccentric-strap within the groove or opening in the fixed arin oi' said rock-shaft. lVhen said eccentric-strap is operated bythe cam C on the driving-shaftand at the movement or adjustment of the rock-shaft by the cani-lever E', as described, the position of the fixed arm at its end is varied, thereby moving the eccentric-strap in which the cam on the driving-shaft operates, which movement or change of position also varies the threw ot the vertical rod G.

The combination, in a sewilig-inachine, of the feeding device, a main driving-shaft provided with a cam or eccentric thereon, a rock-shaft and an eccentric-strap connecting said cam or eccentric and rock-shaft, a rod connectingl said rock-shaft and feeding device, a feed-adjusting cam er lever, a threadtension device, and a rod connecting said tension device and said eccentric-strap,substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a sewing-machine, ot the feeding device, a main driving-shaft provided with a cam or eccentric thereon, a rock-shaft and an eccentric-strap connecting said earn or eecentricand rock-shaft, a rod or lever connecting said rock-shaft and :feeding device, a thread-tension device, a rod connecting said tension device and said eccentricstrap, and means for adjusting the throw ot said rock-shaft, whereby said feeding device and tension device are adjusted simultaneously, substantially as described, and forthe purpose set forth.
