UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. DESCHLER AND EDMUND Il. FRETZ, OF EMAUS,PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 443,709, dated December 30, 1890.
Application tiled May 20, 1890. Serial No. 352,529. (No model.)
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY D. DEsoHLER and EDMUND H. FRETZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Emaus, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Shutter-Bower, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shutter-bowers, and the object thereof is to provide means 1o whereby the shutter may be operated from within the house without raising thewindow, and may be set at any desired angle and locked in such position. This object we accomplish by our invention, which consists of a special arrangement and adaptation of the well-known rack and pinion, said rack being located within a half tube or gutter passing through the window-frame, and also provided with pins which engage notches in said gut- 2o ter to hold it set at any desired position therein, and of certain details and auxiliaries of construction, all as hereinafter more fully described, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which- 2 5 Figure l is a horizontal section through a portion of a window-frame, showing our improved shutter-bower in position with the shutter closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rack and pinion in position to lock the shut- 3o ter open. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the shutter-bower.
Referring to the said drawings, A is the leaf of the lower hinge, supporting an ordi` nary shutter, which leaf has a gear-wheel or 3 5 pinion A surrounding its pintle. The other leaf of the hinge B is secured to the windowframe and carries the pintle B', and extending from this leaf is a tube C, which passes into the window-frame, as shown, and the upper side of which is out away, as at c, forming a gutter or half-tube. Through the tubular portion C moves a rack D, whose teeth engage those of the pinion, and pivoted to the inner end of this rack is a bar D', iitting loosely within the gutter c,extending through the frame into the interior of the house and there provided with a handle or knob E.
The relative arrangement of parts is such that when the shutter is closed, as shown in Fig. l,the knob E stands against the window- 5o frame, and the joint between the rack D and bar D stands just inside the inner end of the tube C. We provide the gutter c with a number of notches hin its upper edge, and through the bar D is seated a pin g, which is adapted to engage these notches. By having several sets of notches it will be readily -seen that the shutter may be bowed, opened completely, or closed tightly, and locked in any of these positions by engaging the pin in 6o certain of the notches. The pin is of course disengaged from the notches by raising the knob E, the hole through the inner face of the window-frame being of a shape and size to permit such raising, as will be readily understood.
In a shutter-bower, the combination, with the shutter having a pinion on its hinge-leaf around its pintle and a tube extending 7o through the window-frame and forming the other leaf of the hinge, the upper half of said tube being cut away for a portion of its length and provided with notches in its upper edges, of a rack-bar moving through said tube and engaging said pinion, a bar pivoted to said rack-bar and moving in said half-tube, a knob on the inner end of said bar, and a pin through the bar engaging certain of said notches, substantially as described. 8o
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY D. DESCHLER. EDMUND H. FRETZ. Witnesses:
C. R. JAMES, C. S. JAMES.
