Description

UNITED STATES PATENILQEFLIQE HUMPHREY HOLDEN, OF NEWY HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND WM. GOODVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR MAKING CEMENT PIPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,369, dated September fZO, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUMPHREY HOLDEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new ,and useful Improvement in Machine for Making Cement Pipe; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a side or front view, and in Fig. 2 a plan of the flask.
In the manufacture of cement pipe the composition is placed in small quantities between the core and case of the vflask and tamped down by hand-a slow and laborious operation.
My invention is designed to substitute other than hand-power, and thereby very much facilitate the operation, and my invention consists in constructing and arranging one or more pressure-rolls to revolve and press upon the composition between the case and core of the flask, gradually rising as the flask fills.
In order to the better understanding of my invention, I will proceed to describe it in connection with the accompanying drawings.
A is a base or bed plate; B, a frame supporting the operative mechanism. On the bed-plate I set the core C and case D, which may be of any known construction.
E are rolls. I illustrate four, but there may more or less. (See Fig. 2.) rIhe said rolls revolve upon bearings a in supports F. The said supports are made fast to a head, G, which said head is firmly Xed t0 a perpendicular shaft, H, which said shaft is made to revolve either by applying` power directly thereto, or through a drivin g-shaft, I, connected by gears K N, as shown in Fig. I.
On the shaf't H I cut a screw, and place a corresponding nut in the frame, through which the shaft passes, and serves to raise or lower the rolls according to the direction in which the screw is turned.
The rolls, being near the bottom ofthe flask, and made to roll around by power applied as before described, feed the composition into the flask. The rolls will press it down hard and gradually rise by the action of the screw, as aforesaid. The feeding must of course be graduated accordingly; or the rolls may be weighted instead of the screw, and rise as fast as the flask is filled and pressed down. If the power is applied to the driving-shaft I, the gear N must be constructed so as to slide freely up and down the shaft with the head G, and at the same time turn with it.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim thereon as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of one or more rolls with a case and core, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein set forth.
HUMPHREY HOLDEN.
