UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL o. SLAGHT AND JOHN L. RYNO, or EAEMER- vILLAeE, NEW YORK.
WAGON-JAG K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,603, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed July 1,1890. Serial No. 357,350 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DANIEL G. SLAGHT and JOHN L. RYNO, citizens of the United States, residing at Farmer Village, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Jacks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
The special object of my invention is to dispense with ratchets, pawls, springs, and complications of parts in a wagon-jack. For this purpose I combine a lifting-block, which slides on and between two posts, with a lever, movable fulcrum-bar, and a cross-pivot to support said bar, all substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective viewof my wagon-jack, and Figs. 2 and 3 vertical sections at right angles to each other. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the lifting-block, lever, and fulcrum-bar.
In the drawings, A represents a base, from which rise two posts perpendicular thereto and parallel to each other. Bis the block upon which the wheel or weight is lifted after the block is placed under the axle. This block has the side grooves b b, which slide up and down upon the inside of the posts P P, and the middle slot S, across which passes horizontally the pivot C. On this turns the lever L.
F is the fulcrum-bar, which is pivoted at one end to the lever and at the other to the cross-bolt D between the posts P P. The fulcrum-bar F may be made with a series of downwardly-inclined notches f f f, so that it may be pivoted at different elevations on the bolt D, and thus hold the wheel at a greater or less height'and work under axles of different height.
The jack is first placed in the usual manner, so that the block B will be under the axle and near the wheel which is to be held above the ground, when the lever L is pressed down until the two pivots CC shall be in the same vertical plane. Then the lever will require no fastening. Thus it will be seen that the front end of the lever and the fulcrum-bar form a toggle, by which the weight is both raised and held.
\Vhat we claim as new is- A wagon-jack consisting of the base A, posts P P, slotted block B, lever L, fulcrum-bar F, and cross-bolt D, combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL O. SLAGI-I'l. JOHN L. RYNO.
