To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, Anon ALEXANDER iXCKLEN and URIAH CLINTQN PIPES, of Arcadia, in the parish of Bienville and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in hand-trucks; and it consists in, first, the combination of the two wheels, the axle, the two side bars, which are pivoted upon the axle and provided at one end with sharp projections to enter the box, and with handles at the opposite ends, and the spring, by means of which these side bars are forced apart; second, the combination of the side bars of the truck with sharppointed levers which catch in any object which is to be moved, and suitable racks for holding these levers in any desired position, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of our invention is to produce a hand-truck which is provided with movable side bars, so that any heavy object can be caught between their ends and moved without the necessity of having to raise the object upon the truck, and which truck is also provided with sharp-pointed levers for helping to steady or support the object while being moved.

The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of a truck embodying our invention.

A represents the wheels, B the axles, and O the sidebars, of the truck. These side bars are formed into the usual handles, D, at one end, and are provided with the metallic plates a at the opposite ends for the purpose of pre venting objects from slipping off. These side bars instead of being secured to the axle in the usual manner, and instead of being stationary-in relation to each other, are here pivoted upon the top of the cross-bar Z), and their ends are made to advance toward or recede from each other, as may be desired. The shorter ends are provided with the sharp prongs or projections H upon their inner sides, so that when the two handles are forced apart these prongs or projections will be made to enter the sides of the box or other object which is to be moved, as shown. For the purpose of forcing these two side bars, 0, apart at their longer ends, so as to keep the projections in contact with the article with which they have been made to engage, the spring I is placed between them.

As a box or other article which is being moved requires to be steadied in position, a pair of levers, J, are pivoted upon the tops of the side bars, 0, and these levers are pro vided with handles at one end and with sharp points or projections at the other. The longer ends, upon which the handles are formed, are made to engage with the ratehets O. which are secured to the side bars for the purpose of holding the levers in any desired position. The shorter ends of the levers are formed into sharp points,which can be made to catch into or against any object that is being moved. For

the purpose of helping to support it or steady it in position, after the side bars, 0, havebeen made to engage with a box or other object, the levers are i'orcedinto the box, as shown, so as to hold the box steady and prevent it from tilting or dragging on the ground or floor as it is being moved. hen the object is placed upon the truck, the truck is used in the ordinary manner, and the sharp projections and the levers are not brought into use. \Vhen, however, the object is too narrow to fit upon the truck, or when itis too heavy to be readily moved, both the side bars and the levers are made to engage with it, as shown.

Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. The combination of the wheels, the axle, the pivoted side bars provided with handles at one end and sharp projections at the other, and a spring for forcing the handles apart, substantially as shown.
