CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,540, dated December 30, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, EDWIN B. REID, shoemaker, of the town of Barrie, in the county of Simcoe, in the Province of Ontario, Canada,
have invented a certain new and Improved Automatic Car-Coupler, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a simple and effective automatic car-coupler by which two cars of different heights may be coupled together without altering the hori zontal draft 011 the coupling-link; and it consists, essentially, of a disk eccentrically pivoted within the draw-head and having fixed to and extending from it a horizontal hookshaped link designed to engage with a lip formed on a wing pivoted in and forming part of the opposite draw-head, suitable levers being provided for operating the disk so as to uncouple the hook shaped links, as hereiir after more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a view of an end of a flat car having my improved automatic carcoupler attached. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my improved car-coupler partially in section, so as to expose its internal construction.
In the drawings, A represents the drawhead, having its mouth divided in the center by the vertical partition B.
O is a disk eccentrically pivoted within the draw-head A and extending across it behind the partition B.
D is a hook-shaped link fixed to the disk 0 and extending out of the mouth of the drawhead A on one side of the partition B.
E is a wing fitted into a recess formed in the draw-head A, to which it is pivoted.
F is a vertical lip formed on the wing E and designed to receive the hook on the end of the link D, attached to the opposite draw head, which draw-head is made exactly the same as the one described, except that the parts enumerated are on opposite sides, so that the hookshaped link of one draw-head will engage with the lip formed on the wing of the drawhead of the car to which it is coupled.
G is a lever pivoted on the end of thecar and extending to its outer edge. The inner end of this lever is connected to the disk 0 either by a crank II, as indicated, or some other means. When the draw-head is attached to a box car, a rod may be connected to the disk and carried up to the roof of the car, so that the disk may be revolved on its pivot either from the outside of the car or from its roof, thereby avoiding all necessity for any one entering between the cars in order to couple or uncouple them.
Owing to the shape of the draw-head A, it will be seen that the connection may be formed between two of them when the cars they are attached to are of different heights, and that the connection so formed will be perfectly horizontal. I
B y turning the disk C the hook-shaped link D attached to it will turn so as to cause its hook to be vertical, instead of horizontal, in which position it is held clear of the lip F on the opposite draw-head. Simultaneously to this action the eccentric motion of the disk 0 presses upon the wing E,so as to force its lip away from the hook on the link coupled to it. Thus both links are simultaneously released.
I should have mentioned that a spring I holds the wing E closed when not acted upon by the eccentrically-pivoted disk C.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. A draw-head A, having a disk O eccentrically pivoted within it and a hook-shaped link D fixed to the said disk, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A draw-head A, having a disk 0 eccentrically pivoted within it and a hook-shaped link D fixed to the said disk, in combination with the pivoted wing E, acted upon by the spring I, and having a lip F formed on it, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A draw-head A, having a disk O eccentrically pivoted within it and a hook-shaped link D fixed to the said disk, in combination with the pivoted wing E, acted upon by the spring I, having a lip F formed on it, lever G, and crank H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
