BOX-CLOSURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,120, dated December 23, 1890.

Letters Patent have been obtained in Great l Britain,dated June 20,1888, No. 9,022; in In dia, dated March 1, 1889, No. 420, and in Ceylon, dated April 24, 1889, No. 309,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri ption.

Our invention has relation to boxes, chests, and the like designed for containing various articles of merchandise, such as textile fabrics, hardware, chemicals, as well as tea, coffee, spices, and other aromatic substances.

The primary object of our invention is to provide such a box or chest,which is of great strength and the edges and corners of which are protected from injury by suitable metallic bands or strips.

2 5 A further object of the invention is to provide a packing box or chest which is adapted to be readily taken apart and packed for reshipment.

With the above objects in view our inven- 0 tion consists in the peculiar construction of the box or chest, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 3 5 view of a box or chest constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof.

In the construction of our improved box or chest we sheath each of the four sides or walls A with iron along its top and bottom edges, preferably by means of U-shaped hoop-iron strips B, which are riveted or otherwise se' cured to the said walls in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The sides are united by means of 5 angular hoop-iron corner-pieces C,which may be riveted or otherwise securely fastened to said sides over the corners, and thereby proroot the latter from injury. \Ve, however, prefer to so fasten the corner-pieces O that they may be readily detached from the box to enable the latter to be taken apart to be packed for reshipment, and for this purpose the rivets along one or both sides of each angle-piece C may have washers under their outer rivet-heads, which latter can thus be easily filed 0d.

The bottom D and lid E of the box are alike in construction, and are'respectively provided with hoop-iron strips D and E, which are riveted or otherwise secured thereto all around on the inner and outer sides. The strips on the outer sides of both bottom and lid project so as to rest upon or against'the strips B and are flush with the outer face of the sides. In constructing the bottom and lid we prefer to thicken the same around their edges, as shown at D E respectively, whereby when the bottom and lid are in place screws or bolts may be used to secure the same to the sides, said screws orbolts entering the thickened por- 7o tions of the lid and bottom and obviating the liability of splitting or breaking of the same at the points where the screws enter.

The manner of arranging and securingthe lid and bottom in place is shown in Fig. 2. When in position,the lid and bottom hear at their outer edges against the strips B upon the inner sides of the walls A, and said bottom and lid are respectively secured to the walls or sides by means of screws D 'E which pass through the strips B and sides and into the thickened portions of the bottom and lid.

In order to give the screws a better hold, we first form the screw-threads by means of the screws, and having removed them temporarily we coat the screw-threads so formed with gum or the like, which binds the fibers together and hardens the screw-threads. \Ve may also insert small threaded metallic pieces in the screw-openings in the bottom and lid, which 0 pieces thereby-act as nuts for the screws.

Although we have shown a box having both lid and bottom construct-ed alike and secured. in place in the same manner and by similar means, yet it will be understood that the bottom of the box may be secured in any ordinary manner and the lid only be constructed and secured in the manner described.

\Vhen the box or chest is to contain tea or similar perishable goods,we line the said box or chest with parchment paper F, or lead paper or other suitable damp-proof inodorous material, having flaps G, backed with calico, if desired. The inner corners of the box may be lined with calico under the paper lining, as shown at H, where the said paper lining is shown broken away.

We may place a packing"- strip of calico, cloth, or the like between the overlapping sheet-iron edges of the bottom and lid and the lower and upper edges of the sides in order to render the box impervious to moisture.

Vhen the boxes are not to be used for tea, we may use india-rubber packing.

The sides, lid, and bottom of the box described We construct of straw-board, wood, or other equivalent material. Either of said materials may be used alone, or it may be covered with very thin perforated or solid sheetiron; orsheet-iron alone maybe used, in which case we use for the lid and bottom a ring of straw-board, wood, or the like all around the edge for making up the depth or thickness required at this place. This ring Would be secured between the outer metal sheeting of the bottom and lid, respectively, and the inner hoop-iron rings E and D, respectively.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a box or chest having its edges and corners provided with metallic strips secured thereto, the sides of said box being provided along their upper edges with metallic strips, a lid for said box provided along its top edges with metallic strips, said lid being adapted to fit within the sides of the box with its metallic strips resting upon the metallic strips of the sides, and screws passing through the latter into the lid, as described.

2. In combination with a box or chest having its edges and corners provided with metallic strips secured thereto, the sides of said box being provided along their upper edges with metallic strips, a lid for said box provided with the thickened portion and with metallic strips alongits top edges, said lid being adapted to fit within the sides of the box with its metallic strips resting upon the metallic strips of the sides, and screws passing through the latter into the thickened portion of the lid,as described, for the purpose specified.
