ELECTRIC-LIGHT HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,685, dated December 16, 1890.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. MOORE, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain Improvements in Electric-Light Holders and Stands, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a device for attachment to an incandescent electric lamp, by means of which the same may be readily attached to a desk, table, or other support, or may be supported upon a desk or table; and the invention consists, generally, in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly point ed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a desk, showing the manner of using my invention in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a lamp having my invention applied thereto and showing the manner of supporting the lamp upon a wall. Fig. 3 is section showing my invention and the manner of securing the holder to a lamp-bulb. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, and Fig. 6 is a perspective, of a socket which may be used upon a wall, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a stand upon which the lamp may be held.

In the drawings, 2 represents the bulb of an ordinary incandescent electric lamp, and 3 represents the iieXible insulated wire connected therewith and adapted to permit the lamp to be moved to any convenient position in the room.

A fiat strip of brass, steel, or other suitable material 7 is arranged to be secured upon the top of the socket of the lamp, and projects therefrom at substantially right angles to the main portion of the bulb. A threaded thimble 9 is arranged to be screwed into the end of the socket, passing through a hole in the strip 7, and having a shoulder l1, that engages the upper surface of said strip. A spring 13 is secured to the under side of the strip 7, and is curved downward, and its outer end bent upward and bears against the under surface of the strip 7. The end ofthe spring is preferably curved away from the strip, as shown at 15, and the end of the strip may be curved away from the spring, as shown at 17. The ends of the strip and the spring therefore are away from each other and may be more readily attached to a shelf or other support. The strip 7 also preferably projects beyond the socket on the other side and may be provided with holes or openings by which the device may be hung upon a hook or nail in the wall or upon a stand especially designed and shown for the purpose, when desired. I also provide a socket 18, that may be secured to the wall of the room, and into which the strip 7 may be inserted while the spring bears on the outside of the socket, as shown in Fig. 2. I also provide a stand 21, that is adapted to be set upon a shelf, desk, or table, and is pro vided with a hook 23 near the top thereof, upon which the strip 7 may be hooked, the hook being inserted through the opening in the strip, and the strip hanging down over the center of the stand and resting upon a cross-bar 25 near the bottom thereof. The stand is also provided with a spring-clasp 27, which may be used to hold the lamp by engaging the socket at the top of the bullo.

The stand may also be provided with a loop 29, into which the top end of the bulb may be inserted, and when it is to be thus used the strip 7 and the spring may be omitted.

It will be seen that with this device the light may be used anywhere in the room. It

may be secured upon a shelf or slide 22, on a desk, as shown in Fig. 1, or in a socket on the wall, as shown in Fig. 2, thus forming a Walllamp, or it may be used upon a stand, as shown in Fig. 7, which may be placed upon a table or desk, or the lamp may be hung on a hook or nail in the wall or ceiling.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with the lamp 2, of the plate 7, arranged upon the top of the socket of said lamp and projecting therefrom, the thimble securing said plate in position, and the spring 13, secured to said plate, substantially as described.
