SHADE OR GLOBE HOLDER FOR CANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,669, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed October 30, 1889. Serial No.328,645. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Roms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade or Globe Holders for Candles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in shade or globe holders for candles; and it consists, essentially, of a ring or sleeve adapted to be supported on the upper end of the candle and sustaining the superimposed ring for the shade or globe, combined with a guide by which the vertical movement of said sleeve may be directed.
The invention consists, further, in certain details of construction, all of which will be understood from the description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a candle, illustrating the application of the invention thereto, the holder being illustrated in section on the dotted line 1 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the shade-holder on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a transverse section through the candle and guide on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A designates the candle, upon the upper end of which is placed the sleeve B, having the inwardly-turned flange (J to rest upon the outer edges of the upper end of the candle A. At the lower end of the sleeve B the metal of which said sleeve is composed is thickened, forming an annular bead D,which is slotted, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and by full lines at E in Fig. 2, the purpose of the annular bead D being to afford sufficient weight to cause the sleeve B to slide downward upon the candle A in proportion as the upper end of said candle is consumed. The slots E in the annular bead D are provided to prevent said head and the lower portions of the sleeve B from becoming unduly heated while the holder is in use. The upper portion of the sleeve B below the flange-O is expanded laterally, so as to clear the sides of the candle A and form between the same and the sleeve a space F to aid in preventing the heated metal from unduly acting on the candle. Upon one side of the sleeve B is provided the lug G,in which is seated the lower end of the rod II, the up per end of which has rigidly secured toit the ring I,which supports the shade. (Denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 1.) Upon one side of the annular bead D is provided the lug J, supporting the vertical slide K, which is inclosed by and is adapted to have a vertical movement within the vertical guide L, which is illustrated in Fig. l as consisting of a hollow tube having upon one side the vertical slot M, in which the lug J may move during the adjustment of the sleeve B. The lower end of the guide L is secured between the outer ends of the clamps N, which upon being clamped upon the candle, as illustrated in Fig. 1, serve to support said guide. The clamps N are provided with a spring P, which acts to close the inner ends of the same upon the candle or its support, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The clamps N will preferably be formed of sheet metal of ornamental configuration, and provided at about their center with the vertical pivot Q, which passes through lugs R and thereby connects said clamps and permits them to have the desired sumed the sleeve B moves downward, being guided and sustained bythe slide K and guide L. The guide L serves not only to direct the vertical movement of the sleeve B, but aids in preventing said sleeve from being tilted over by the weight of the shade and ring I or by accident. The guide L lends rigidity to the structure and insures the satisfactory adjustment of the sleeve B. Within the ring 9 I is provided a wire loop W, into which the upper end of the guide L passes upon the lowering of the sleeve B and ring I.
