C. H. MORGAN.
COMBINED CANE AND UMBRELLA.

A TTOHNE YS UNiTn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ll. MORGAN, OF lVlCb'l CHESTER, PENNSYLYANIA.
COMBINED CANE AND UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,491, dated December 9, 1890. Application tiled February 24, 1890. Serial No. 341,629. (No model.)
YTo all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Il'. MORGAN, o'l' W'est Chester, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Cane and Umbrella, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is a combined cane and umbrella; and the object of my invention is to provide a neat and convenient device which will operate as a cane or umbrella and which may be quickly and easily changed from one to the other.
This construction will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a vertical section of the device; Fig. 2, a view of the device with the umbrellatop mounted andspread upon the tube, a portion of the cover being removed to show the position of the ribs, stretchers, and runner; Fig. 3, an enlarged detail view of the crown-piece and of the rod attached thereto, which limits the upward movement ot the runner; and Fig. 4, an enlarged detail view of the runner by which the umbrellais operated.
The tube A, which constitutes the body of the cane and the stick of the umbrella, is hollow, as shown, and may be made of any suitable material. It is closed and reduced at its lower end, forming a shoulder l, and its reduced end is screw-threaded to tit the internal screw-thread of the removable nipple B. Its upper end is internallyv screw-threaded to receive the removable handle C, which is screwed therein. lVithin the tube is the umbrella-top, which consists of the ribs D, suitably covered, the stretchers E, attached thereto, the crown-piece F, to which the upper ends of the ribs are attached, and the runner ll, to which theinner ends ol' the stretchers are attached. The ribs D and stretchers E are of the usual construction, may be covered with any suitable material, and need no detailed description.
The crown-piece F is composed oi' a number of links joined together at the ends, to each of which a rib l.) is attached, and the diameter of the crowirpiece is such that it will rest upon the shoulderl of the tube A without sliding down the body ot the tube. The crownpiece F is also provided with a depending rod a, which extends down the outside of the tube A when the crown-piece isin position thereon, and its lower end striking the ruimer Il determines the` upward movement of the runner upon the tube.
The runner ll is composed of a number of vertical slats hinged together at the sides, so that the runner may be folded or collapsed, and thus occupy little space. The upper end of the runner is provided with a series of brackets l), to which the inner ends of the stretchers E are attached. Attached to one side of the runner H is a vertical flat spring d, which extends below the lower end of the runner and terminates in a curved end d', which bears against the tube A and holds the runner in position thereon, and which also serves as a thumb-piece, by which the position ot the spring and runner may be regulated. rlhe spring d is attached to the runner H by an inVerted-Ushaped bracket e, which clasps the spring, and in which the spring is longitudinally or vertically movable, and the spring is prevented from being removed from the bracket e by the raised arm f, each end of y which is attached tothe spring (l. The pressure with which the spring d bears upon the tube A is regulated by moving it in the bracket e. 1f the spring is drawn well out, the pressure of the curved portion CZ upon the tube will be light, and the runner Il may be easily moved thereon. It the spring is pushed inwardly, or rather upwardly, the leverage between the bracket e and curved end d will be shorter. Consequently the pressure will be greater and the runner ll will be retained in position upon the tube.
Supposing the device to be in a cane form, as shown in'Fg. l, and it is desired to put it in the form of a raised umbrella, the nipple B and the handle C are removed from the tu be A, and the top, with the parts attached, is withdrawn from the tube. The tube is then pushed through the runner H and crownpiece F, and the crown-piece will rest upon the shoulder' Z. The nipple B is then screwed upon the reduced end of the tube A, holding the umbrella-top in position thereon, the han- IOO ing in a hollow stick A, having adetachable ferrule B at one end and a detachable handle at its opposite end, the detachable umbrellatop having a link crown-piece provided with a depending rod a, a collapsible runner H, adapted tc abut at its upper end against the lower end ot the rod a, and a sliding spring d, mounted on the outer side of the sections of the runner and curved inwardly at its lower end under the lower edge of the runner to engage the stick, substantially as set forth.
Y 2. The combination, with the tube A, ribs D, and stretchers E, of the collapsible runner H, adapted to slide upon said tube and having means, as spring d, with curved end d', bracket e on the outer side of one section of the runner, and raisedarm f, crossing the bracket e' at right angles, for holding it in position thereon, substantially as described.
3. In a combined cane and umbrella, the collapsible runner H, having means, as brackets l), for connecting With the umbrellastretchers, and having means, as spring d, with curved end d', bracket e on the outer side of one section of the runner, and raised arm f, crossing the bracket e at right angles, for holding it in position upon the umbrellastick, substantially as described.
