IMPROVEMENT IN INHALING APPARATUS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,2411. dated September 13, 1364.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES WARREN, a resident of Milford, in the county ot' Worcester and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new or improved apparatus for inhaling medicated vapors into the lungs and bronchial passages of a person; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical eestion, ot' the said apparatus.

My in en ion is for effecting inhalation of vap rs by the nostrils rather than by the mouth of an individual.

In the drawings, A denotes a bottle or rese viir for holding the uid medicament to be inhaled in astate ot' vapor and with air. This bottle or rese voir has an open neck provided with a cap or cover,B, which should tit closely on the neck, and be furnished with two vertical, tubes, C D, extending upward from the said cap and open at their lower ends into the interior of the bottle. There is also a third tube, E, extending from the cap B and down info the bottle and nearly to its bottom, the said tube E being open at both ends, so as to allow air to be drawn through it when it may be immersed in a liquid contained within the bottle or reservoir. The upper ends of the two vertical tubes C D should be arranged at a proper distance apart for both of them to be inseited in the nostrils of a person. Furthermore, these nostril-tubes are supplied with an elastic air-tight valve, E, which may be a small sheet of vulcanized caoutchouc arranged on both tubes, and having them ex tended through it, and grooved, as shown at a a, so as to hold it in place. The said valve is intended, when the apparatus may be in use, to be pressed up against the nostrils or those parts ot' the nose immediately contiguous to their mouths, the same being to eii'ect- ,ually close'such mouths of such nostrils.

When the apparatus is charged with a medicated iiuid and applied to the nose of a person in manner as explained, an inhalation by the nose will cause air to be drawn through the tube E and the duid, and thence into and through the nostril-pipes and into the nostrils, bronchial tubes, and lungs, the air while passing through theliquid being charged with the vapor thereof.

I do not claim an inhaling-vessel as made with au air-supply pipe and a single air-exhaust pipe; but

What I do claim as my improvement is- 1. The combination and arrangement of the two nostril-pipes G D with the vessel A, its cap B, and an induction-pipe, E, the same being substantially as described.

2. The combination and arrangement of the air-tight exible valve F with the two nostrilpipes C D, and the vessel A, provided with a cap, B, or its equivalent, and an air-induction pipe, E, the whole being substantially as eX- plained.
