J. H. STONEMETZ. STBREOTYPE PLATE CASTING BOX.
No. 442,341. Patented Dec. 9. 1890.
.with.
JOllk II.
S'IONEME'ITZ PRIN'ERS MACHINERY COMPANY,
PATENT @IFFICE STONEMETZ, OF MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CE SAME PLACE.
STEREOTYPE-PLATE-CASTING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,341, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed July 1,1890. Serial No. 357,434:- (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn II. S'roNEnn'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millbury, in the countyof Worcester and State of Massach nsetts, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Stereotype Plate- Casting Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyin drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements in stereotype-plate-casting boxes hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stereotype-plate-casting box locked up ready for casting. hi 2 is a perspective view of same thrown open for the removal of the plate. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of same, showing the slotted bearing of the axis of the shell against which the matrix rests. Fig. 4- is a detail side view of a clamping-hook and eccentric.
This invention consists in the novel construction. and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the" construction of my improved stereotype-plate-casting box shown in the drawings,
A is an upright frame, having a base B thereon adapted to be secured to a floor, and C the central or core section of the casting-box, which is cast integral with or firmly secured to the upper ends of the sides of the framework A. In the upper ends of the sides of the frame A are slotted holes a, through which a shaft D passes into cars or bearings d on the lower end of the shell-section E of the casting-box, into which ears or bearings (Z the shaft I) is firmly keyed, so as to rotate there- To the shaft D between the sides of the frame A is also firmly keyed a lever E, which is provided with. a weightf, adapted to counterbalance the weight of the shell E when turned back from the core-section C, as illustrated in Fig, 2.
On each edge of the movable shell-section E are side bars II, hinged thereto so as to be turned back, as shown in Fig. 2, or be turned forward so as to cover the outer edges of a matrix placed in said shell and retain it in place, and also operate to fill the space between the edges of the core C and shell E.
On the front of the upright core-section C is secured a stop 0 for regulating the distance apart of the sections A and E, and on said core-section C, near the u pper and lower ends thereof, are also journaled transverse shafts I and J, which extend beyond the sides of the core C and shell E when closed up a sufficient distance tosupport hooks 1), adapted to engage with stud-pins e on the sides of the shell E. The shafts I and J are also provided with eccentrics 17, secured thereto, to which the hooks b are pivoted, and which also act upon the edges of the core C and upon the side bars II, hinged to the shell E, when the hooks b are engaged with the pins c and the shafts I and J rotated to firmly clamp the shell-section E to the core-section C of the casting-box. The shaft I is provided with a lever K, secured thereto, by means whereof the shaft I can be rotated, and the shafts I and J are also provided with short levers L, and between said levers a link or push-bar extends, pivoted to each of said levers, so that the shafts I and J will move by the operation of the lever K in unison with each other. The upper end of the shell E is provided with laterally-project ing handles N, by means whereof the shell E is raised and lowered on its axis D, which axis D, passing through the slotted holes a in the sides of the frame A, permits the shell E to move back from the core G when the clamping-hooks b are disengaged from the studs 6, and thereby prevents the corners of a newlycast plate from being marred by the operation of turning the shell back from the core C to the position shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose of removing such newly-cast plate therefrom. m is a removable semicircular stop adapted to be placed over the edge of the lower end of a matrix placed in the shell E to keep it in place. Having thus fully described my improved stereotype-plate-easting box, its operation is so obvious to those skilled in the art to which it appertains that further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Therefore what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination, with the upright stationary core-section provided with a stand beneath it having horizontal slots at, said coresection and stand being rigidly connected together, of the movable outer section and a shaft secured to the said outer section and journaled in the said slots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the core-section, of a shaft journaled in bearings secured to the core-section, the eccentrics i, and the handle I secured on the said shaft, the hooks pivoted
