SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4i2,296, dated December 9, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. WEsrcA'rE, of \Vorcester, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clutches, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description of the same, accompanied by drawings, in which Figure 1 denotes a central sectional view. Fig. 2 is a view of the side of the actuating eccentric, the shaft being shown in section on. line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 2 also shows a portion of the removable cover C; and Fig. 3 is a view of the side of the collar attached to the shaft and the inelosing friction-strap, the shaft being shown in section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a view of the friction-clutch with a portion of the shaft to which it is applied, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the same.

A denotes the shaft to which the collar A is attached.
3 is a belt-pulley capable of rotating about the shaft A, and provided with aweb B on one side of the pulley and a removable cover C, attached to the pulley by means of screws (1. B is a hub of the pulley, which forms the bearing upon the shaft A.
D is a solid friction-ring inclosing the collar A, and having on one side a projecting lug b entering an opening 0 in the web 13 of the pulley, by meansof which the friction strap or ring D is made to rotate with the pulley B around the shaft A. Upon the opposite side of the friction-ring D is a roll D, which turns on a stud D held in the ring D. E is an eccentric turning on the shaft A and having a flange 6 and a hub f, provided with a flange g, forming a neck h.
F is a sliding collar provided with a groove j, extending partially around the collar to receive a shipper consisting of a curved prong j and a lever-handle. (Represented in broken lines at j The ends of the curved prong rest against the shoulders j, and thereby pre vent the collar from turning on the shaft A. The'collar F has a flange 7.: overlapping the hub of the eccentric E and engaging the neck h, so that a sliding motion of the collar F along the shaft A will impart a correspond ing sliding movement to the eccentric E and at the same time allow the eccentric to turn freely on the shaftA and within the flange 7.: of the collar F.
The purpose of the above-described device is to move the eccentric along the shaft, and I accomplish this purpose by means of the collar F, with its flange 7c overlapping the flanged hub of the eccentric, as described; but I do not confine myself to the construction shown. Neither does the specific device shown and described form any portion of my present invention.
The flange e of the eccentric has a spur e projecting radially from the edge of the flange e and resting in a recess 6 in the cover C. A projecting rib m on the cover C rests against the spur c, causing the eccentric E to rotate with the pulley B as the latter is rotated around the shaft A by means of power applied to its face, and thereby maintaining the thin side E of the eccentric opposite the roll D, so that as the collarF is moved along the shaft by means of the shipper-rod (indicated by broken lines in Figs. 4: and 5) the collar will cause the eccentric to slide along upon the shaft, and the thin side E of the cocentric will be carried under and beneath the roll D. The collar F, being held from rotation by the shipper, will allow the disk C and connected pulley to rotate by means of the openingj in the disk, as represented in Fig. 5. The edge of the eccentric is slightly chamfered at n to allow the eccentric to be readily pushed beneath the roll, which crowds the eccentric uponthe shaft A, causing the frietion between the eccentric and shaft to be greater than that between the eccentric and the roll D, allowing the roll to run around the eccentric as the eccentric becomes attached to the shaft by means of the friction between it and the shaft. As the pressure increases between the eccentric and the roll D, the eccentric becomes held more firmly upon the shaft, and the motion of the roll around the eccentric increases the pressure collar A and the friction-ring D is not sufficient to cause the rotary motion of the pulley B to be imparted to the shaft A, the sliding motion of the collar F and eccentric E is continned, carrying the eccentric nearer tocthe.

In the position of theeccentric E, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, the radial spur e is shown as resting against the rib 1m upon the cover 0, causing the eccentric to be rotated around the shaft A as -the pulley is rotated; but as the eccentric ismoved along. the shaft A by vthe'shipper-lever engaging the collar F the radial spur c is carried past the rib 'm, cover 0 revolve around the shaft A independently of .the eceentric,- which becomesattached to the shaft A by the pressure of the eccentric E against the roll D ,as already de-;

5. In a clutch, the combination, with the shaft and a pulley revolving around said shaft, andafixed friction-collar attached to said shaft, of a -friction-ring inclosing said friction-collariand having a lug entering an opening in said pulley, whereby said friction= .collar is carriedaround with said pulley, sa id lug adapted to have a slight radial mot onin said opening, substantially as described,:and
connected actuating devices, substantially as described, whereby said friction-ring 1s pressed against said friction-collar.
6. The combination,-with a shaft and a pulley having a rotary motion aroundsaidshaft, of thefrict-ion-collarA, provided with radial grooves or notches, a friction-ring inclosing said friction-collar and I carried around it by the rotation of the pulley, and provided with a rollD, and an eccentric sliding on the shaft and having a spur adapted to engage one of said radialgrooves or notches in the frictioncollar whenever'said eccentric is moved beneath the roll D, and the friction-ring-thereicy-pressed upon said friction-collar, substantially as described.
