Description

L. O. MORGAN. CONNECTING ROD.
No. 442,293. Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
WITNESSES A TTOR/VEY 5 n1: Nonms versus :07, Pflofwuikm, msmvaruu, o. c.
UNITED STATES- PATENT. OFFICE.
LEWIS MORGAN, OF CANTON, OHIO, .ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM J. PIERO, OF SAME PLACE.
CONNECTING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,293, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed March 10, 1890 To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEWIS C. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting-Rods; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing parts in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the retainingrods removed. Fig. 4 is a view showing the outer cap or box designed and calculated to be located at the r eciprocating end of the connecting-rod, showing portions of the retaining-rods.
The present necting-rods;
invention has relation to conand it consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and claims.
particularly pointed out in the Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all mgs.
the figures of the draw- In the accompanying drawings, A represents the main rod or bar, to which is securely attached the heads or blocks B and B. The retaining-rods O C are located substantially as shown in the drawings, and are securely attached to the block D, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of preventof said block D are 11 eaded or swaged.
The head or block B is provided with the grooves a, which are for the purpose of receiving the retaining-rods C C, substantially as illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2. The opposite ends of the retaining-rods O G are screwthreaded, as shown in the drawings, said screw-threaded portions being for the purpose of receiving the i hin1ble-nuts D, as illustrated in the drawings.
substantially The thimblenuts Dare received in the apertures 11, which apertures 71 are form diameter than the ap ed somewhat larger in erturcs 1), thereby form- Serial No. 343,301. (No model.)
ing the shoulders orledges c. The outer ends of the thimble-nuts D are provided with the heads (Z, which in this instance are provided with the apertures (l', which apertures are for the purpose of receiving the end of a rod to turn the thimble-nuts D; but it will be seen that the same object can be accomplished by means of an angular head and a wrench; but I prefer to use the device shown to turn the thimble-nuts D. These thimble-nuts D are open at both ends, one end being for the purpose of receiving the adj usting-bolts E.
In use, when it is desired to tighten or take up the wear at the boxing of either the crankpin or cross-head bar, the adjusting-bolts E are turned a short distance, so as to bring their inner end away from the screw-threaded ends, at which time the thimble-nuts D are turned so as to draw or pull on the retainingrods C 0, thereby bringing the block D and the block F toward each other, which in turn takes up any looseness which may be at either end of the connecting-rod proper.
It will be seen that in case the boxing proper is loose only at one end the looseness will be taken up, and that it is not necessary to determine at which end the looseness is before tightening. It will also be seen that the tightness of thebearing orboxingat each end of the connecting-rod proper will be the same. hen the boxing has been properly adjusted as to tightness, the adjusting nuts or bolts E are turned inward until their innerends abut against the screw-threaded ends G of the retaining-rods C O. The thimble-nuts Dare so adjusted thattheirinnerendswill abut against the shoulders or ledges 0, thereby providing a stop for said thimble-nuts and allow the retaining-rods C O to be drawn endwise, and at the same time drawing the blocksB andD together in the event there is any looseness between said blocks B and D, and in the event there is any looseness between the blocks B and F the block F will be forced toward the block B, thereby taking up any looseness which may be between said blocks 13' and F. The block F is forced toward the block B by means of the inner ends of the thimble-nut bearing against the shoulders or ledges c.
I prefer to adjust the heads d so that they will bear upon the block F, thereby providing two bearing-points for each of the thimblenuts D. 7
It Willbe understood that the connectingrod proper above described is calculated and designed to be used in steam-engines or in other machinery employing connecting-rods having boxing upon each end of the connect ing-rod.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination of the main bar or rod A, having attached thereto the heads or blocks 13 and B, the retaining-rodsO (l the thimbl'e nuts D, the adjusting-bolts E, the blocks-F and D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a connecting-rod, the combination of a the retaining-rods O 0, having the screw threaded ends, as G, the thimble-nuts D, the block F, having the ledgces c, the block D, and the adjusting-bolts E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The block B, provided with grooves a, the block D, the retaining-rods C C, fixed to the block D, the main rod A,having fixed thereto the blocks 13 and B, the block F, provided with the apertures b and b, the thimble-nuts D, provided with the heads (Z, having apertures d, and the adj ustin g-bolts E, substantially as and 'for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
LE\VIS C. MORGAN.
