STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,852, dated December 2, 1890. Application filed July 11, 1890. Serial No. 358,430. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J AMES PATERSON, a citizen of the United States, residingat Stockton, San Joaquin county, State of California, and WILLIAM PATERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benicia, Solano county, State of California, have invented an Improvementin Steam-Boilers; and we hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in steam-boilers; and it consists of horizontal and vertical sections detachably connected together, a means for supplying the feed-water through the vertical section to the horizontal one, and a supplemental connection between the two, whereby water may be supplied in case of temporary failure of the feed-Water apparatus.
It also consists in certain details of construction, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
In the construction of our boiler we employ a horizontal portion A and a vertical portion B. The horizontal portion A has a furnace or fire-box O beneath it, and products of combustion pass from this fire-box over the bridgewall D into the space beneath the vertical section B, from which they pass up through the tubes in the vertical section and escape through the smoke-stack E, as shown.
In the construction of this boiler we make the two parts A and B separate and independent, the part A having a flange turned up around, as shown at F, and having the end which abuts against the portion B formed with the same curvature, so as to fit half-way around the vertical section B, to which it is bolted or riveted through the flange F, as shown. If desired, the two may be riveted permanently together; but for convenience in construction and repairs they may be secured together by screw-bolts passing through the flange of the horizontal section and into the rim of the vertical section, as shown.
The steam-space of the boiler is contained within the horizontal portion A, and G is a steam-do me having the usual safety-valve and steam-pipe leading from the dome to the engine or other point where the steam is needed.
The vertical portion B of the boiler is considerably higher than any portion of the section A or steam-dome G, as shown in the drawings.
The feed-water pipe ll opens into the vertical section B at any suitable point, and when water is supplied to the boiler it will fill this section to the dotted water-line, as indicated, so that this section will always be full of water to the upper tube-sheet, and this tubesheet will thus be protected from dainageby reason of the great heat passing through the tubes in the vertical section.
From the top of the section B a pipe Ileads, and, passing down alongside of the section A, is connected with the water-leg of this section, as shown, so that water, after filling the vertical section B, is forced through the pipe I and into the section A until a sufiicient supply is introduced into this section. A checkvalve 0 prevents any pressureor return from A to B; but this valve is forced open to allow water to pass from B to A whenever the pressure from the feedpipe is superior to that in the boiler A.
J is a valve or cock by which the supply may be regulated.
K is a gage by which the amount of water in the section A is indicated at anytime, and the usual gage cocks or other devices may be employed, as upon any other boiler.
It will be manifest that all water supplied to the boiler is first introduced into the vertical portion B, which is filled full, and the surplus passing out through the pipe I enters the boiler A, which is thus kept constantly supplied from the vertical portion B.
The steam-space of the boiler is entirely contained within the horizontal portion A, and steam is taken from the steam-dome G, as before described.
L is a pipe connecting with the lower portion of the vertical boiler B, and also with the horizontal boiler A, as shown, and M is a cook or valve, which maybe opened to make communication through this pipe or closed when such a communication is not desired. Underordinary conditions this cock Will be closed; but if for any reason the pump or feedwater apparatus should become temporarily disarranged it is only necessary to open the cock M, when the water from the vertical portion 13 will flow by gravitation into the boiler A, and the amount supplied to this boiler may be regulated as desired as long as the level of the Water in the section B is higher than that in the section A.
Having thus described our invention, What We claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A boiler consisting of the horizontal section having the steam-space and steam-dome, an independent vertical section against which the horizontal section abuts and to which it is riveted or bolted, said vertical section extending above the horizontal section and having firetubes, a furnace and combustionchamber situated, respectively, beneath the horizontal and vertical sections, the feedwater pipe through which water is delivered into the vertical section, and a supplemental pipeconnecting thelower part of the vertical chamber through which the products of cornl bustion pass, a feed-Water pipe delivering into the vertical section, and a pipe connecting the vertical with the horizontal section,
with check and regulating valves, a supplemental pipe connecting the two sections, substantially as herein described.
