GASKET HANDLE.
No. 441,148. Patented Nov. 25,1890.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. FLETCHER, OF NEW HAVEN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. H. ARNOLD, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
CASKET-HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,148, dated November 25, 1890.
\ Application filed September 13, 1890. Serial No. 364,832. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that 1, JAMES R. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in casket-handles; and the obj ectof my improvement is to produce a neat finished article of superior strength andat a small cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my handle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the handle-plate. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on line a: so of Fig. 2, together with one of the fasteningpins and a transverse section of one of the pivotal trunnions. Fig. 4 is mainly a detached side elevation of the handle, a portion thereof being in section on the line a of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of my handle on the line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one of the pivotal lugs of the handle-plate.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the handle which forms the subject-matter of a prior patent, No. 438,349, dated October lat, 1890, whereby the parts are more conveniently assembled and produce an article of superior strength.
A designates the handle-plate, which in the main is of an ordinary form and provided with pivotal lugs a a, between which the handle B is secured. These lugs at their front edges are of rounded form on their outer sides, while at their inner sides their edges are strengthened by being made of a square form, as at '7, Figs. 2, 3, and 6. Their confronting inner faces are also provided with slots 8, Figs. 2, 3, and 5, which open on the front side and terminate in a rounded form near the center of said lugs, as shown in Fig. 3. A pinhole is also drilled in each of said lugs from the under side and transversely to the slots 8 to receive the fastening-pins 11 11.
The handle B is provided with a central lug or hinge-knuckle b, which fits in between the lugs to a of the handle-plate. It is also provided with projecting trunnions 9 9, which enter the slots 8 and serve as the pintle on which the handle is hinged. I prefer to form these trunnions of a piece of wire cast into the handle, and, if desired, its middle portion may be roughened or flattened, as shown in Fig. 5, to more firmly secure the wire Within the handle. On each side of the lug or knuckle b in the body of the handle I form grooves 10 10, Figs. 4 and 5, to receive the squared portions 7 7 of the pivotal lugs and permit the handle to turn, while at the same time the sides of the handle just outside said grooves may be fitted to match the outer rounded edges of said lugs.
The handle Bis placed in the handle-plate with the trunnions 9 9 resting in the slots 88, and the pins 11 11 are inserted in the pivotal lugs a a from their under edge, so as to come in front of the trunnions, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The holes for the pins 11 do not come through the top of the lugs, and when the parts are assembled no pivot-pin or fasteningpin will be in sight.
The article is substantial and can be produced at a small cost.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described casket-handle, con sisting of the handle-plate having pivotal lugs a (0, provided with slots 8 8, extending from their outer front edge inwardly on their confronting faces, the handle having central knuckle I), provided With side trunnions 9 9, and the fastening-pins 11 11, inserted in said lugs from their under edge, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described casket-handle, consisting of the handle-plate A, having pivotal lugs a a, with rounded front edges on their outer sides and squared front edges on their inner sides, and provided with inwardly-extending slots 8 8, the handle B, having central knuckle 17, side trunnions 9 9, and grooves 10 10, and the fastening-pins 11 11, inserted in said lugs a a, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified. 7
JAMES R. FLETCHER.
