Description
T. H. TRIGE. LINE CHECK.
(No Model.)
. No. 440,667. Patented Nov. 18, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TANDY l-I. TRIOE, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
LINE-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,667, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed April 8, 1890. Serial No. 352,106. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TANDY H. TRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Checks; and I do declare the followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to line-checks for attaching to drive-lines for horses; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a method that will prevent one line hanging so slack that by a sudden or strong pull upon the other 'line the horse will be swung so far around that the vehicle is liable to be overturned; second, to provide means for holding the lines sufficiently taut to prevent either line dropping and catching under an end of the shafts or pole, and thus causing accidents, and, third,to provide a means by which the ordinary checkrein may be dispensed with and the drive-lines made to serve the double purpose of lines and checkrein. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of the entire invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view as it appears with clasp swung open to permit the insertion or removal of a line.
In the Views similar letters refer to similar parts.
A is a set thumb-screw, having a circular plate B rigidly attached to its lower end.
D is a clasp with a female screw 0 in the middle, through which screw A operates. Clasp D swings on a pivot E, the pivot attaching the clasp to plate, piece, or strip F.
F is a solid plate or piece of the form shown in drawings, and is preferably cast with the upper part G flanged and having a projection II, with socket I, to' receive and hold down the swinging end of clasp D. When the end of clasp D is swung into its socket I, a slot J is formed between clasp D and piece F for the purpose of receiving the drive-line. This clasp being swung open, as in Fig. 2. the line is placed in slot J in piece F, clasp D is swung into its socket, as in Fig. 1, and the In use a pair of these line-checks are attached to the drive-lines just back of the turrets 011 the harness-saddle. The line-checks being cast of greaterlength than the diameter of the ring of the turrets, they are prevented slipping through the turrets unless turned and pressed through by hand.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A line-check consisting of a flanged plate, a swinging clasp pivoted on the base, a setscrew passing through the clasp and carrying 011 its lower end a disk, and an angular projection H on the base extending over the free end of the clasp, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
TANDY H. TRIOE. Witnesses:
W. G. FAULEIGH, J. H. CONWAY.
