WITNESSES N INVENTOR 6 W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PHILIP DIEI-IL, 'OF ELIZABETH, NEI/V JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY.
FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,622, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed July 1, 1886.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP DIEHL, of Elizabeth, conntyof Union, and State of New Jersey, have inventedan Improvement in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel mechanism for actuating the feeding device or bar, the same being moved positively from the main shaft in the overhanging arm of the machine, the construction of the mechanism enabling the length of the feed to be readily adjusted.
In this my invention the feed-bar to be reciprocated is shown as jointed at one end to an arm of a rocking shaft parallel to the main rotating shaft, the latter being provided with a cam or eccentric, which is embraced by two arms of a forked lever provided with a guiding slot or way, with which co-operates a block pivoted upon a link, the lower end of which is jointed directly to an arm of the same rocking shaft to which is jointed the said feed-bar to be reciprocated, the said link having combined with it means, as hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the position of the block attached to it may be moved toward or from the fulcrum of the said forked lever and in or with relation to the said slot or way. The greater the distance of the said block from the said fulcrum the greater the longitudinal movement of the said link and the greater the length of the stroke or reciprocation of the feed-bar actuated by the said rocking shaft.
Figure 1 in side elevation represents a sufficient portion of a sewing-machine to enable my invention to be understood; Fig. 2, a righthand elevation thereof to the left of the dotted line as as, Fig. 1, the link and forked lever being shown as dotted in behind the fra1nework; and Figs. 3 and 4-, details to be referred to.
The bed-plate A, upright arm A','and overhanging arm A constitute part of the frame- Work.
The feed bar a to be reciprocated has at Serial No. 206,811. (No model.)
one end, as herein shown, a toothed block a, which enters a slot or opening in the plate A. The rear end of this feed-bar is jointed to one or more arms a of a rocking shaft a sustained by pointscrews a" a This lock ing shaft has an arm a, to which is jointed the lower end of a link b, provided at its upper end with a swivel block or slide 1), Whldl co-operates with a slot or guideway 19 of a forked or bifurcated lever b having its fulcrum at b, the said slot or guideway b in the said lever being made across the same in a diagonal direct-ion, the fulcrum of the said lever being near one end of the said slot. The forked end of the lever'b embraces a cam or eccentric b on the rotating shaft d, having proper bearings in the frame-work and rotated in any usual manner. The link I) is connected to the screw e by a coupling link e. The threads of the screw 6, preferably left-handed, are surrounded and engaged by a thumb-nut e threaded externally, preferably righthanded, and of coarser pitch than the threads of the screw 6. The nut e is screwed into the frame-work, and when turned in one direction or the other moves longitudinally with it the screw e at a speed equal to the difference in the pitch of the threads of the said screws. The turning of the nut causes the link I) to be moved so as to place the swivel block or stud b closer to or farther from the fulcrum of the lever 11 in the slot or guideway If, so that as the said lever is rocked by the cam or eccentric the link I) is moved in the direction of its length for a greater or less distance, the farther the block b from the fulcrum the greater the stroke of the link I) and the greater the extent to which the rocking shaft a is turned and the greater the stroke or reciprocation of the feedbar (6, and vice versa.
I claim I11 a sewing-machine, the combination, with the rotating shaft cl, provided with a cam or eccentric, of the forked lever b embracing the said cam or eccentric and having the slot 11 the said lever being pivoted near one end of the said slot, the feed-bar a, the rockshaft a with which the said feed-bar is connected, the link I), jointed to an arm of the said shaft a the block or stud carried by the I screw, whereby a differential adjustment is to said link and entering the said slot 19 the secured, substantially as set forth. link 6', jointed to the said link I), the screw e, In testimony whereof I have signed my provided with ears to which the said link a name to this specification in the presence of 5 is pivoted, and the adj listing-nut c tapped in two subscribing witnesses.
