Description
J. SELBY.
Corn Planter. Nq. 44,019. Patented Aug. 30. 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES SELBY, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
. IMPROVED CORN-PLANTER.
Specification forming art of Letters Patent N0. 44,019, dated August 30, 1864.
.To all whom z't mag; concern;
Be it; known thm; I, JAMES SELBY, of Lhe city and county 0f Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Corn- Planter; und I d0 hereby declnre the following t0 be a full and exact description of the same; referenee being had t0 the accompanying drawings, making part of Ihis specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan 0f my improved complanter with a portion 0f the hopper removed t0 expose some of the pnrt's loeated beneath. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation 0f the same' with one of the wheels removed, tl 1e section being tanken in the line x 00. Fig. 3 is a rear view ot' the same.
Similar letters 0f reference indicate correspqnding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists, first, in an improved arrangement of devices for raisir) g the runners 0ut; ot contact With the ground to avoid 0bstacles 01 when the machine is n0t planting; second, in a novel manner of applying the pivoted frame upon which the hopper is monnted,
am]. in peculiar devicvs for adjusting the same;
third,inimproved droppingmechanism;fourth, in a novel construction and arrangement of scrapers f0x removing dirb which nmy accumulate 011 the pheripberies ot' the wheeLs.
In order that others skill'ed in the art t0 which myinvention appe1bains 1nay be ennbled t0 fully understand und use the same, I will proceed t0 describe its construction und operanon.
In the accompanying drawings. A A may represent the wheels, A the axle, BBB B B the frzune, and C the tongue, 0t' the'machine. 'lo the respectiveeuds of Ehe tmnsverse bar B, an the front ot the machine, am attaehed Lhe runners D D by means 0t' piv'ots d. From the rear of the runners D rise the conducting-Lnbes E, npon which rests Lhe hopper F.
G represents the drivers seab.
H H represent levers, which are connected together ab theil rear ends, so as t0 move simultaneously, by means 0f a transverse bar, H, a11d pivoted at h upon the axle A. 'l0 the freut ends ot' t-he levers H H are pivoted links lvh, which ab their opposite and upper ends am pivoted to lugs f 3 f, projecting fron1 the under side 0f the hop per F. 'lhe l evers H H am arranged respectzivel y 011 each side of the drivers seat, so th-at by bearing down thereupon with bis feel; the driver is enabled to elevate the hopper, and consequentl y raise the cultivatorteeth t0 any desimble height from the ground.
The runners D D being pivoted to the transverse bar B, and the hopper F moving simultaneously. wibh tl1e runners D D and conducting-tubes E, eause tl1e movement 0f tl1e whole to be performed in the am of a circle, and it: will be seen that the pivoting 0t' the links h h ab both ends is admirably adapted to f'acilitato the elevation of the runners by the depression 0f the levers H H.
Hitlxerto it has been the practice 130 arrange the pivoted frzune L0 which tl1e runners are attaehed in such manner ahnt when the runners were t0 be elevated the fran1e would turn within 0x between the main frame B B. In my inven-tion 'n1any 0f the appendages of this pivoted frame are dispensed with, be same beinp; constituted by the hopper, the conductiugtubes, and the runners themselves. The couducting-tubes 2md runners are arranged t0 work directly in front of the wheels of the machine, und are ad apted respectively 130 m0ve 011 the outside ot' the lrame B B when being t-urned up out; 0f contact; with the ground.
l I represent sl0tted platzes projecting npward fron1 the bars B B, aml secnred thereto by means ofset-screws M, by menns of which they may be seeurely adjusted in any position in which they mny be plzwed, so ns to ret;ain the hopper F in proper position t0 cause the rnnners D1) 150 penetrate t0 the depth ab whiuh it; may be desircd t( have theuiwork. Tina upper onds 0f the plates l I am deflected in order t0 fonn suitable surt'aees for the under side 0f lhe hopper t0 rast upon. In euch of the seedboxes F F are lucated stationary semicircular plates ff, which constitute cut-off's for the seedaperturesff in the slide F These cut-ofls ffnre placed in contraposition with each other, und it; is evident that tbeir peculiar construction adapts them t0 p'erfonn t-heir fun'ction 0f separating the quantity 0f 00m t0 be dropped an every reciprocatiou of the slide F without; in any manner injuring the Same. 1tis apparent; filmt; the same remark may be applied with relation t0 the operation of the stirrersfif whieh stirrers a re rigidly secured in and project upward frou1 the slide F 'lhe stirrers f, n'1oving forth -.1nd back between the cut-ofl's ff, keep the c0rn in motion and prevent the szune from packing, the rounded edges 0f the eut-offsfallowing the grains 130 slide froxn one position to another With0ub danger of injury. The slide may be adapted for adjustment in any suitable mann-er in order to vary the capacity 0f the seed-apertures f f.
O O represent scrapers secured 011 the respeetiVe ends of 1;he transverse bar B ab tbe rear of the maehineby means ot' pivots 00, and provided at their re2u ends With foot-rests 0 0, 130 enable the driwzv from bis seat G t0 press tl1e scrapers in contact with th6 peripheries -of ohe whee1 to remove anydirt which may adhe1e thereto.
O O represent slotted platcs, which may be secured in any position in which tuey may be placed by set-screws 0 o These plates may be slid outward, and so adjusted in order retain the scmpers firmly in contact with the wheels; 01 said pla.tes may be moved inward, so as t0 adnpt the scrapers tohang looselyand be operated ab intervals by the feet 0f the driver.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I elaim 213 new therein and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent:
l. The links h h, jointed ab their respective ends t0 the pivoted frame D E F and treadles H H, and operating in the manner described t0 facilitate theelevatiou of said pivoted frame.
2. The combination 0f the pivoted fmme D 19 F with the adjus'table plates 1 I f0r gaging the depth at; which it is desired t0 have the runners work, substantially as Set; forth.
3. The sorapers 0 o, in combination with tbe slidin g plates o o, constructed and operatin g in the nmnner and f0r the purpose explained.
