To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHANN NADLER, an engineer, subject of Austria, residing at 27 Lerchengasse, Vienna, in the Province of Nether-Austria, in the Empire of Austria- Hun gary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifts or Elevators for Transporting Small Objects, (and on which I have obtained patents as follows: in Belgium, No. 83,165, dated September 15,1888; in Germany, No. 48,185, dated September 5, 1888; in England, No.13,500, dated September 19, 1888; in France, No. 192,816, dated October 23, 1888; in Austria-Hungary, No. 21,597 and No. l0,079, dated October 1,1888, and No. 57,657 and No. 7 ,854, dated October 8, 1889;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
The invention relates to improvements in lifts for elevating small objects-such as letters,newspapers, and the like-from the hall or lower door of a building to the stories above; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the invention, the lower casing having its facing side removed to show the interior. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same at right angles to Fig. 1.4 Fig. 3 is a partial side view of the lower casing,show ing the operating crank. Fig. 11 is a plan view of the lower casing. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of said casing. Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical sections of the upper part of the casing taken at right angles to each other. Fig. 8 is a detail view showing the arrangement of the brake-band.
Referring to the drawings by letter, g designates the casing of the actuating mechanism of the lift, which casing has on one side the vertical slot g2 for the outward projection of 5o the main shaft w,

The ends of the rope are connected by a sleeve-coupling s', so that it may readily be placed and removed, and to said coupling are secured a hook and a chain to which light articles may be attached when desiring to raise the same. q is a buffer secured to the top of the coupling-piece s', and preventing jar when the said coupling-piece strikes the floor of the casing g.

d is an eye made in the upper part of the frame of the receptacle t, on the side opposite the tube h, and riding on the rope s.
The tube h has a projection h upon it, which when the basket has descended far enough passes through a slot ff in the top of the casing g, and strikes and depresses the outer arm of a lever f, pivoted upon the shaft w. To the end of the inner arm of the said lever is attached one end of a brake-band f', which partly surrounds the wheel R and stops the motion of said wheel, and consequently IOO the descent of the basket, the other end of the band f being attached to a fixed support within the casing. v
The foregoing is a description of the elevator mechanism.
The following is a description of the indicator mechanism: Upon the top of the casing g, above a slot ,e2 therein, is an indicatorscale z covered, the front of the casing being of transparent material-such as glass-by a suitable casing. Within the casing g, below the slot z2 is secured t-he horizontal way Z, upon whichV travels a block Z having a vertical pointer z, which faces the scale atone end and can be moved successively to register with the vertical lines thereon, which lines are marked lst story, 2nd story, and so on. A cord :c having its upper end secured to one end ofthe block Z, passes over a pulley e secured in the casing g, to a proper support and divides into two strands, 'one of which passes under the pulley Z of a weight P, then over a pulley e2 on the way Z, and then to the shaft w. The other strand extends directly to the shaft w, to which the adjoining ends of both strands are secured. A similar cord is secured to the opposite end of the block. passes over similar pulleys, has connected a similar weight, and has the ends of its strand secured to the shaft w; the ends of the strands of the cords a: being arranged to wind in opposite direct-ions on the said shaft. It is evident that as the shaft w is rotated by means of the crank-handle 7c, one cord will wind on and the other cord will unwind from the shaft and the block and pointer will be moved along the way Zin front of the marks on the indicator, which marks are made at proper points to truly indicate the story to which the basket or receptacle has risen.
The frame a has a short motion up and down, limited by the shaft w in the slot g2 of the casing g. (See Fig. 2.)
The only function of the weights P is to keep the cords x x sufficiently tense.
Having described my invention, I claim l. The combination, with the rope-wheels, the rope, and the tubes secured at a proper point to the rope and provided with a projection, of the lever pivoted on a shaft above the lower rope-wheel with its outer arm in the path of the said projection when the latter descends, and the brake-band attached at one end to the inner arm of the lever and bearing on the lower rope-wheel, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the rope-wheels, the rope, the basket having an eye in its frame for the passage of the rope, and the tube attached to the rope and to the basket 6o at the side opposite said eye and provided with an instanding projection below the basket, of the lever pivoted within the casing and operated by said projection, and the brake-band attached to said lever and bearing on the lower rope-Wheel, s bstantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the casing having the slot g2 and the vertical ways h Within it, of the sliding frame having strips b to 7o move in said ways, the shafts journaled in said frame, the upper shaft projecting through the slot g and having a crank-handle on its outer end, the gearing connecting the shafts, the upper and lower rope-wheels, the lower rope-Wheel being mounted on the lower shaft, and the rope connecting said wheels within the casing g, and the upper rope-wheel being mounted on a shaft near the top of the building, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the plate having the indicator-scale, the horizontal way therebelow, and the sliding block having a vertical pointer, of the shaft having a crank-handle, and the ropes or cords connecting opposite ends of said block and the said shaft, passing over the necessary pulleys between the block and shaft and arranged to wind in opposite directions on the latter, su bstantially as specied. The combination, with the plate having the indicator-scale, the horizontal Way therebelow, and the sliding block having a vertical pointer, of the shaft having a crank-handle, the ropes having ends attached to opposite ends of the sliding block, passing thence in opposite directions over pulleys, then each dividing into two strands, one of which runs direct to the shaft while the other passes over a pulley to its point of attachment to the roo shaft and has a weight suspended to it between the two pulleys.
