An independent movement of either of the adding-Wheels out of its proper order-that is to say, an independent movement of any adding-Wheel in advance of that to the left of it-is prevented by introducing in the tra-in by which the master-wheel F is geared to its appropriate adding-wheel a spur-wheel M, having a Wider face than said master-wheel, and pivoting a'locking-dog N in position to be carried into engagement with the teeth of said spur-wheel M. This dog is automatically Withdrawn from the Wheel M by means of a spring O, and is carried toward it by contact with the cam projection on the periphery of the cam wheel or disk J, which carries thc pawl actuating the master-wheel next to the left of that locked by the dog, said cam projection being so located and proportioned in length as that the dog Willbe moved thereby so soon as the retraction of the pawl begins, and will be thereby held in engagement with the spur-wheel, so as to lock the adding-Wheel until the pawl has fully completed its stroke and returned to its first or normal position. Hence no one adding-wheel vcan be moved after either of the pawls actuating the adding-wheels has been retracted until adding wheel actuated pleted their movement.
If the construction of the machine be so far modified as to permit the adding-wheels A to be brought into close proximity to the pawlactuated master-wheel F, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to render the intervention of a spur- Wheel M in the train unnecessary, each locking-dog N, actuated by a cam moving in unision with the pawl H, actuating a master- Wheel, may be made to engage directly the master-wheel next to the right, as shown inl Fig. 6. In such case the pivoted arm carryin'g the dog N is actuated by a lever P, projecting radially from the pivoted hub of said arm, and bent at its outer end to bear against the periphery of the cam-disk J, moving with said pawl and the thereby have comvthe arm carrying the pawl H, actuating the master-wheel next to the left, the dog being on the left thereof adapted when the cam-disk J has forced outward said lever P to engage the teeth of the master-wheel on the right and lock it. The reverse movement of either wheel is prevented in the customary manner by a springactuated pawl R. (See Fig. 5.)
In the operation of the device the pawls H H H are irst retracted by the movement of the several type-segments as they are turned against such of the stops E E as have been previously depressed to determine the type to be brought to line of view or print at the opening D. So soon as the movement of each pawl H begins, the dog N, resting in the recess in the periphery of the cam-disk J, to which the arm I, carrying the pawl, is secured, is carried out of said recess, and the opposite vface of the dog is thereby forced, against the stress of the spring actuating the dog, into engagement with the teeth of the master-Wheel F, thereby locking it and the adding-Wheel geared thereto. In the retraction of each pawl its spring L is brought under stress, and so soon as the pawl is released the spring operates to carry it back to its first or normal position. The pawls are all simultaneously released when the type-segments are thrown back to their rst position; but the first pawl at one will be free to move because of the lock upon the wheels actuated by each of the others through the engagement of the dogs therewith, in manner as described. Upon the return of the first pawl to its first position under the iniiuence of the spring L the dog riding upon the cam-disk to which the arm carrying said pawl is secured is permitted to drop back under the influence of its springO into the recess in said disk, and thus free the master-wheel engaged thereby. When this wheel is .free to move, the pawl actuating the same will operate under the influence of the spring L to drive it, and when the movement of the pawl is completed the next dog ,will be in turn released, and so on, the several dogs being successively moved and the several adding-wheels left free to be auto- -matically actuated by the pawls in regular succession, each after the movement of the first pawl actuating the wheels to the right is completed.
It is evident that the automatic successive movement of the several adding-wheels in regular order is obtained by the devices herein described independently of the mechanism by which a retraction of the actuating-pawls H H is effected, and that said devices may be employed with any form of apparatus in which adding mechanism is required and wherein provision is made for moving a series of pawls H H. My invention is not therefore limited to the combination of the addingroo IIo

The combination of a train of addingwheels, pawls severally actuating said adding- Wheels, a spring actuating each pawl and brought into play by the retraction of said pawl, and a series of dogs severally brought into engagement with the gear of each adding-wheel except the first, each by the retraction of the pawl actuating the next preceding wheel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the train of adding-Wheels, a corresponding series of master- Wheels severally geared thereto, a series of oscillating pawls severally actuating said master-wheels, and a series ot springs severally actuating said pawls to produce automatically an independent movement of each pawl to move its appropriate adding-Wheel, of a series of spring-actuated dogs severally mounted to engage and lock each adding wheel, but normally disengaged therefrom by a spring, and a cam-disk moving with each paWl to enforce the action of the dog engaging the Wheel next following that moved by said pawl, whereby said second Wheel is locked by the dog until the pawl has finished its stroke and completed the movement of the irst Wheel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
