FREMONT J. OLEAVER AND GEORGE FASSOLD, OE PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMATIC REGULATOR FOR DYNAMOS AND MOTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,016, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed April 11, 1890. Serial No. 347,489. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREMONT J. CLEAVER and GEORGE FAssoLD, both of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Automatic Regulator for Dynamos and Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a dynamo to which our improved regulator has been applied. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line {1; 0c in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the armature-core.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efiective regulator for dynamos and motors.
Our invention consists in the combination, with thefield-magnets of a dynamo, of an armature formed of a hollow cylinder of non-magnetic material wound with a conductor, a com- 1nutat0rcylinder connected with the conductor of the armature, an armature -core placed within the hollow cylinder and supported by a shaft extending through the tubular armature-shaft, and a pair of brushes connected with the shaft of the armature-core, so as to be moved thereby.
It also consists in the combination, with the movable brushes, of curved bars connected electrically with the brushes for taking off the current, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The field-magnetA is of the usual construction, and will therefore need no special description. The armature B is formed of circular end pieces a a, mounted upon the tubular shafts b b. To the circular end pieces a a is secured a hollow cylinder 0, of non-mag netic material. The said cylinder 0 is Wound with the conductor in the usual way, the terminals of the coil of the same being connected with the commutator cylinder D. Vithin the hollow cylinder O and upon the shaft 0 is mounted an armature-core E, which loosely fits the hollow cylinder 0. The said armature-core E consists of the segment of a cylinder of iron having concave sides, either laminated or homogeneous.
The shaft 0 is prolonged beyond the tubu lar shafts b b. The ends of the said shaft are supported on pointed screws d d,inserted in yokes e e, attached to the supports of the journal-boxes of the tubular shafts b b. To the shaft 0 is secured a cross-arm F, of insulating material, in which are inserted rods f which carry the commutator-brushes g g. The cross-arm F carries metallic contactplates h h, which are connected electrically With the rods ff and touch the curved bars t' i, which receive the current from the brushes. The curved bars t' t" are provided with binding-posts j j for receiving the conducting-wires leading from the dynamo. To the end of the shaft 0 opposite that carrying the cross-arm F is attached one end of a spiral spring 0 which surrounds the end of the said shaft and is attached by its opposite end to the yoke c. This spring is designed to oppose the pull of the armature on the core E and to return the core and the brushes to their original position when the machine is idle. It will be seen by this constructionthat the brushes will always occupy the same position relative to the armature-core E. This armature-core will shift automatically in accordance with the drag or lead of the armature, and will always take up its position with its poles in the strongest part of the field. In consequence of this arrangement the brushes will always be held to the point of the least sparking, and the adjustment of the brushes will be effected automatically by every change of load upon the dynamo or motor to which our improvement is applied.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a regulator for dynamos and motors, the combination of an armature formed of a hollow cylinder of non-magnetic material, conductors arranged upon the hollow der, a commutator-cylinder connected with the conductors, a movable armature-core supported within the armature-cylinder, and commutator-brushes connected with the armature-core, substantially as specified.
