BOI LER-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,761, dated November 4, 1890.

To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHNSON MCGINNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at E1nlenton, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Boiler-Bottom, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottoms for locomotive and other steam boilers; and it has for its object to construct a boiler-bottom, or mud-ring, as it is usually called, which shall be simple, durable, and inexpensive', and by which objections common to boiler-bottoms as ordinarily constructed shall be avoided.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction of the said boiler-bottom, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing a bottom or mud-ring embodying my improvements detached from the boiler. Fig. 2 is a side View showing a boiler to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line c in Fig. 2.

Boiler-bottoms or mud-rings are ordinarily constructed of wrought-iron plates joined together by means of rivets. This construction has been objectionable, for the reason that water will be liable to leak around the rivets and seams, thus causing the boiler-bottom to rust, and in the course of a comparatively short time to become useless. To overcome these objections, I propose to construct the boiler-bottom or mud-ring in a single piece or casting, which in the drawings is designated l. Said castingconsists of an annular trough, which is preferably rectangular in shape, so as to adapt it to be attached to the boiler. The said annular trough or casting is provided along its upper edges with perforations 2 to receive the bolts 3, by means of which it is in practice secured to the lower edges of the hull and fire-sheets at the bottom of the boiler. The inner wall 4 of the said annular trough is provided at its front and rear ends with integral ribs or flanges 5, adapted to support the grate-bars, which are mounted upon said flanges in the usual manner. The outer wall G of the annular trough or casting is prol vided with hand-holes 7, having covers 8 of ordinary construction, said holes being for the purpose of affording access to the interior of the mud-ring for the purpose of cleaning the latter, when desired.
It will be seen that my improved boilerbottom or mud-ring, being made in a single piece or casting and absolutely without seams, is not liable to the obj ections which have been referred to as existing in boiler-bottoms of ordinary construction.
The device is simple in its construction, and may be readily'applied to locomotive and other steam boilers of the usual construction.
My improved boiler-bottom is made entirely free from joints or rivet-holes and seams. It is therefore impossible for water to leak through at any point and cause the adjacent parts to rust and deteriorate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. A bottom or mud-ring for steam-boilers, consisting of an annular trough-shaped casting provided along the upper edge of its outer and inner walls with bolt-holes, substantially as set forth.
2. A mud-ring for steam-boilers, composed of an integral ann ulai1v trough-shaped casting, the outer Wall of which is provided with handholes, substantially as set forth.
3. A mud-ring for steam-boilers, consisting of an annular trough-shaped casting, the inner wall of which is provided at its front and rear vends with integral ribs or flanges to support the grate-bars, substantially7 as set forth.
4. As an improvement in mud-rings for steam-boilers, an annular trough-shaped casting, the outer Wall of which is provided with hand-holes and with bolt-holes along its upper edge, and the inner wall of which is provided at its front and rear ends with integral ribs or flanges to support the grate-bars, and with boltholes along its upper edge, substantially as set forth.
