WATER-FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,645, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed July 18, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. FLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Filters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in water-filters; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device of this character which can be readily applied to a cistern or well, and from which the filteringchamber may be readily removed and cleaned and replaced without disturbing the remaining parts.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-*- Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my filter applied to a well, with parts broken away to better show the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line ,2 z'of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line y y of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of a platform or support around the top of a well, and B are vertical rods, screw-threaded at their upper ends and passed through the said support or platform, and provided upon their upper ends with nuts a, by which the parts are held together and tightened when necessary. The lower ends of these rods are formed into hooks b, as seen clearly in Fig. 1, and are designed to receive and support the sections of tile hereinafter described.

and having its lower edge resting in and supported by the hooked ends of the vertical rods, as shown in Fig. 1. This tile is provided a short distance from its lower end with an inwardly-projecting flange or lugs c, as seen in Fig. 1, adapted to form a support for the filtering-chamber. This chamber D is arranged to fit quite snugly within the section of tile and has an opening in its bottom covered with some suitable reticulated medium d. It has also a removable top E, provided with an opening covered by a reticulated medium a, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. This top or cover is removably held in place, preferably, by the substantially X-shaped brace F, two or more arms of which are designed to engage lugs or loops f on the chamber, which pass up through openings in the top or cover, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The brace Fis provided with acentral enlargement 9, provided with a hole 2' to receive a hook or other suitable device for the purpose of raising the same when it is desired to clean it.
G are sections of imperforate tile, as many being employed as necessary owing to the depth of the well, and I preferably place between each two tile-sections rubber or other packing-rings H, which serve to prevent chipping of the sections as they are brought together.
The operation will be readily understood. The water from the well or cistern must pass through the perforated tiling, where it will be filtered, the filtering-chamber being filled with charcoal or other suitable filtering material. The chamber is easily removed by a hook or other device engaged in the hole in the brace, as will be readily understood from Fig. 1, and when cleaned may be as readily replaced. 7
What I claim as new is-- 1. The combination, with the rods hooked at their lower ends, of the perforated tilesection supported upon the hooked ends of the rods and providedwith inwardly-projecting extension and the filtering-chamber supported thereon, substantially as specified.
