SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,638, dated November 4,1890.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands for Vehicle- Wheels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference `being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sand-bands for vehicle-wheels; and it has for its object to generally improve upon the construction and render more serviceable in operation this class of devices.
A further and more immediate object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character specified which will serve both as a guard to prevent sand or dirt from entering the wheel, and will at the same time cause water, sand, or other foreign substances which may find entrance to the bearings of the wheel to be automatically thrown out by the rotation of the wheel.
To the above ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specication, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my sandband with the vehicle-hub shown as partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross-section upon line w a: of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the sand-band, showing its construction and the manner in which it is attached to the axle.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents a vehicle-axle, and B the vehicle-wheel, both of which may be of any of the well-known forms of construction.
O is a disk of metal, the diameter of which will permit of its being fitted within the collar D upon the inner end of the hub of the wheel. The disk is provided with a slot E, corresponding in width with the width or thickness of the axle B, over which it is fitted, as shown.
F is a horizontal plate of metal, which rests upon the upper face of the axle, the ends of the said plate extending a slight distance beyond the sides of the axle, as shown. This plate is soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the outer face of the disk C.
G is a horizontal plate of metal, similar in general form to the plate F. The plate G is secured tothe lower face of the axle, and is provided with an extension G which enters the slot E of the disk C. The plates F and G are attached together by the bolts G2, passed vertically through suitable openings formed in the plates upon each side of the axle, as shown.
H is a semi-cylindrical plate of metal, which is securely soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the lower face of the plate G, extending diagonally across the said plate with its outer end extended a short distance beyond the outer face of the disk C. It will be ob served that the part H extends from the inner end of the hub of the wheel through the slot E, adjacent to one of the sides of the slot, and that the end of the plate adjacent to the hub of the wheel is beveled, as shown at a, said bevel being upon the outer or convex side of the plate, and that the opposite end of the plate is beveled upon the concave or inner side of the plate, as shown at h.
The collar or band D at the inner end of the hub, within which is fitted the disk C, I have shown as driven into the end of the hub, though it is at once evident that it may be secured to the hub in other ways, if preferred. This collar has a less diameter at its inner than at its outer end, and in this construction resides an essential feature of the invention, as it serves, in connection with the plate H around which it rotates, toA eectually throw IOO out from the Wheel such foreign substances as may enter the same, as Will be readily understood.
The operation of the device is simple and readily understood. The disk C serves to prevent in a great measure sand or other foreign substances from entering the Wheel, and any such water, surplus oil, or other refuse material which may accumulate Within the journal-box will in the rotation of the Wheel be carried to the inner end of the hub,\vhere it will enter the Haring collar D. The inner end of the curved plate H will scrape the saine from the end of the hub, while its upper edge will serve to etfectually clean the inner face of the collar, thus carrying all foreign substances from the Wheel out through the open end of the curved plate ll beneath the axle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Lctters Patent, is-
1. The coinbinationnvith the axle,the wheel, and its hub, of a disk iitted over the axle, a plate extending diagonally across the face ot a metallic plate with its outer end extended beyond the outer face of the disk, as set forth.

The coinbinatiomwith the axle,the Wheel, and its hub, of the plate F, resting upon thc upper face of the axle, the plate G, secured to the lower face of the axle, the said plates being secured together, the plate Il, and the plate G, all arranged and operatingsubstantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
The combination, with the vehicle-axle and the wheel mounted thereon and provided at its inner end with a projecting collar, as described, of a curved plate extending diagonally across the under face of the axle and adapted when the Wheel is in position upon the axle to enter the collar and bear against both the inner end ot' the hub of the Wheel and the inner face of the collar, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with the axle, the slotted disk C, secured thereto, the horizontal plates F and G, secured to the outer face of the disk above and below the axle, respectively, and the curved plate Il, secured to the lower face of the plate G and extending diagonally across the axle with its outer cud extended through the slot in the disk beY nca-th the axle, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
