UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE VARREN PARSONS, OF VAMEGO, KANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,549, dated October 28, 1890.
Application tiled December 17, 1889. Serial No. 334,073. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, HORACE WARREN PAR- SONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vtrainego, in the county of Iottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ch urns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chnrns, the nature of which will be understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a detail plan.
In the drawings, A represents a can which forms the outer wail of the churn, and B the churn proper.
Churn B is provided on its lower end with an extended base B', which fits snugly within the can A and serves to hold part B in the center of can A, a space being left between parts A and B, as shown. The top of base B is perforated, as at ce, and the space between parts A and B being filled with water the water will pass through such perforations and thus circulate -around the sides and bottom of the churn.
O O represent bands surrounding can A and provided with eyelets through which vertical rods D D are passed, and by which such rods are supported. These rods extend a suitable distance above the top of the can and churn proper, and at their upper ends are arranged to telescope with hollow rods E, each rod D being provided with a nut Z) adjustably mounted thereon, such nuts serving to support rods E and render the vertical adjustment of such rods possible. At their up per ends the rods E are provided each with a bearing c, in which a shaft F rotates. Mounted upon shaft F is a hand-wheel G and a friction-wheel H, the latter consisting of a disk provided on both faces near its periphery with a holding-surface d.
I I are the paddleshafts, and .I the paddles. At points near their upper ends each shaft carries a friction-wheel K, each of which consists of a wheel grooved on its periphery and provided with packing e. Shafts I have bearings at their lower ends in the bottom of part B and at their upper ends in supports L, such supports being adjustably mounted upon a bar M by mea-ns of pins f and set-screws g, the latter entering slots 7L in bar M. This bar is also provided with openings 'L' to permit of the passage therethrough of rods D and E, and with notches j for shafts I I, notches being provided in the last-named instance to admit of the removal of the paddle shafts without displacing' the friction-wheels. Each rod E is provided with two nuts Z, between which bar M is placed.
The operation will be readily understood, motion being imparted to the paddles through the line of gearing described, and the vertical adjustment of the parts being` provided for.
The outer casing A is preferably provided with an opening m at its lower end, through which the water may be drawn off. A thermometer N may also be provided in order that the temperature may be taken, such device being secured to the churn I5.
What I claim is- The combination of the can, the rods D, secured thereto, the rods E, secured on the upper ends of the rods D and adjustable vertically thereon, the bar M, adjustably secured on the rods E, the paddle-shafts supported by the bar M, the driving-shafts journaled in the upper ends of the rods E, and gearing between the said drivin g-shaft and the paddleshafts, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
noRAoE WARREN PARsoNs.-
