GUSTAV L. JAEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLOTTlNG-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,405, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed March 15, 1890- Serial No. 344,049. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV L. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blotting-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to a new article of manufacture, the same consisting of a paper having its surface opened up for rendering said paper bibulous or absorbent and for providing it with a smooth and veivetysurface.
In carrying out myinvention Itakeunsized paper as it comes from the paper-machine and expose one or both sides thereof to the disturbing action of mechanical means for opening up the surface of the samefor instance, to the grinding or abrasive action of sand-paper, emery-wheels, wire brushes, or to the action of cards or scrapers. rates and lifts the surface-fibers, and the paper is thereby provided with a soft velvety surface and is rendered highly absorbent.
The annexed drawing illustrates an apparatus for carrying out my invention; but any other suitable apparatus may be used to the same end.
In the drawing, the letterA designates a roll of paper supported in the frame of the apparatus and provided with the usual brake or tension device.
B and C are guide-rolls, D and E emerywheels, and F a take-up roll. The emerywheels D and E are arranged to act upon both sides of the web, and by preference move faster than the said Web, acting upon the same by differential velocity. The tension may be regulated by the guide-rolls or by the frictional resistance of the roll A. The paper, if
Such action sepa-v found necessary, may be made more pliable either before or after treatm ent by passing it between several rolls or bars, as G G.
By the above described method I produce a highly absorbent or bibulous paper, especially adapted for use as commercial blottingpaper and for other purposes where an absorbent paper is required, such paper having its fibers separated and raised and presenting a velvety surface as distinguished from ordinary blotting-paper or paper-felt.
I do not wish to confine myself to any particular means for disturbing the surface-fibers of the paper or to any particular manner in which the fibers are disturbed, my invention being the conversion of ordinary'paper into an absorbent or bibulous paper having a soft velvety surface by means of a direct action on the surface-fibers.
Heretofore commercial blotting-paper has been manufactured by a special process from a special paper-stock. By my process I am enabled to manufacture the same from any kind of paper regardless of the stock or ma terial from which it is made.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a bibulous paper consisting of unsized paper with raised and separated fibers, presenting a velvety surface, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have sign ed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of March, 1590.
GUSTAV L. JAEGER.
