SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,168, dated October 28, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD B. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Chester, in the county of Chester, State of Pennsylvania, and GEORGE REHFUSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butro ton-Hole Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which I 5 Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 afront elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, of sewing-machine head and needle-bar. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of sewing-machine head. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of under side of sewing-machine or bed-piece. Our invention has reference to button-hole sewing-machines, and our improvements have 0 for their object to provide a construction whereby, first, the needle-bar is made adj ustable in the head of the machine so as to vary the distance from the edge of the cut in the fabric for the button-hole to the point where 3 5 the needle passes through the fabric-in other words, to provide means for varying the sewing or seam around the edge of the cut in the cloth which constitutes the button-hole seam, and, second, to provide means whereby the bearing or track in which the needle-carrier moves may be reciprocated or vibrated later ally in order to bring the under needle alternately on opposite sides of the upper needle.
Our improvements consist, first, in the combination, with the needlebar of a sewing-machine, of a head in two parts, one adjustable on the other; second, in the combination, with the needle-bar and adjustable head, of awed go or beveled slide which fits between the two parts of the head, and, third, in the combination, with a carrier for the lower needle, of a vibrating block or bearing or support therefor.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the head of the machine, which affords bearings for a vertically-reciprocating 5 5 needle B. Said head A is made in two parts A and A The part A is integral with the needle-arm 0, while the part A is in a separate piece from the part A and held thereto by screws d d, which pass from said part A and enter the part A Said part A has two lateral bosses at a, which afford bearings for the needle-bar B, so that by moving said part A toward or from the part A the needle-bar will be shifted laterally and the needle which it carries caused to recede farther from or approach nearer to the edge of the button-hole beneath, thereby varying, according to the direction of the lateral movement of the needle 4 bar, the width of the stitch. The part A has a vertical slot or groove in its inner side in which a rib or tongue on the inner side of the part A fits, and the bottom of this grooveis tapering.
E represents awedge or taperingslide, which 7 5 is fitted between the parts A and A and is furnished with a swivel-adjusting screw e, passing through a plate E on the head A. By turning the screw the Wedge E may be raised or lowered. To adjust the part A and move the needle-bar laterally the screws d d are first loosened, and the screw e then turned in the desired direction to move the wedge E either up or down. After the desired adjustment has been obtained, the screws dd are turned in fast, clamping the wedge or slide E and making the head A solid. The slide or wedgeE has slots through which the screws d (1 pass, so that said screws do not impede the vertical movement of said slide or wedge. 0 The lateral movement of the part A in one direction is effected by a downward movement of wedge E after loosening screws 01 d. The opposite movement of said part A is effected by elevating the wedge E after loosening 5 screws 01 d and then tightening said screws (1 d.
The divided head and adjustable needle-bar herein-described is an improvement applicable to any sewing-machine in which it is desired to have a lateral adjustment of the needle-bar in order to vary the width of the stitch or for any other purpose.
F is a block pivoted at f to bed-plate A. In this block F there is a groove f in which the needle-carrier F moves, and to which the lower needle is fastened. The needle-carrier F is operated by means of an elbow-lever F pivoted to bed-plate A at f, and having on its short arm a roller h This roller enters groove g in a cam K, carried, on main shaft K. There is a stud f in needle-carrier F, also a hole f in the long end of elbow-lever F in which is inserted a movable pin f having a hole f in its end, and through which stud f in needle-carrier F passes. Thus by means of cam K on main shaft K, elbow lever F movable pin f working in hole f the end of said elbo w-lever F and stud f in needle-carrier F a curvilinear movement is given to the longest end of elbow-lever F as well as to needle-carrier F, and by which means said lower needle is carried alternately above and below the cloth-plate. Through the medium of cam G on main shaft K and stud h, carrying roller on pivoted vibrating block F, one end of said pi voted block F, in which is 0 erated needle-carrier F is caused to vibrate as each stitch is made in the fabric. The efiect of thus vibrating the end of block F is to carry the lower needle bodily across the path of the upper needle, both on its ascent and descent. In other words, when both needles are below the cloth-plate, the lower needle is on one side of the upper needle, and when they are both above the cloth-plate the lower needle is on the opposite side thereof. Thus the lower and upper needles are made to alternately pass through the thread-loop thrown out by each without the employment of a loop-spreader.

hat we claim as our invention, and for which we desire to secure Letters Patent, is
1. A divided sewing-machine head comprising parts A and A one of which parts carries the bar to which is fastened needle (1/, adjusting-wedge E, having slots d, adjustingscrew 6, plate E, and screw d d, by which several means needle a is moved farther from or brought nearer to the cut edge of the fabric, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the stitch-formin g mechanisms of a button-hole sewing-machine, said mechanisms embracing two needles, a straight upper needle a, adapted to pass through the fabric, and a lower needle a having in addition to its general vertical curvature a side or lateral curvature at right angles with the general vertical curvature, adapted to pass over the edge of the fabric, but both conjointly operated above and be neath the cloth-plate, of the gro ved vibrating block F, fulcrumed beneat t e clothplate, the lower needle reciprocating herein, means for vibrating said block F, consisting of the main shaft K, cam G, and stud and roller h, or their equivalents, whereby lower needle 0 is placed on one side of the upper needle when they are both above the clothplate and on the opposite side thereof whenv they are both beneath the cloth-plate, substantially as described.
