SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,094, dated October 23, 1890.
Application filed March 26, 1890- Serial No. 345,384. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRVING BARKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Lubrieating Car-WVheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the car-wheel. Fig. 2 is a front view of the cap for closing the front chambered end of the hub of the car-wheel, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wood wedge-block for closing the feed-aperture in the hub-cap.
This invention relates to certain improvements in self-lubricating car-wheels of the class wherein the wheel is loose on the axle and provided with a storage-chamber for holding oil for lubricating the axle-spindle by means of entering between itand the box from said chamber, and relates more particularly to the means for closing the feed-aperture leading to said storage-chamber.
Referring to the drawings, A is the carwheel, preferably made of cast-iron, and cast so as to have an annular storage-chamber O surrounding the box E, in which the axle-spindle is held by means of a linchpin H.
P is a conical-shaped cap for covering and closing said annular storage-chamber and secured to the wheel by means of bolts D passing through the integral side lugs L of said cap and through the web or spokes of the.
wheel. A gasket, made of rubber or other suitable material, is placed between said cap and wheel to prevent leakage between them. The said cap P is provided in its central part with a feed-aperture 0, through which oil is introduced to the chamber 0. It is intended to keep said chamber filled up to about a line with the axle-spindle. After the oil is introduced into said chamber it is necessary to close said feed-aperture so as to prevent escape of oil and prevent foreign substances from entering therein, and in such manner that quick and easy access may be had to said chamber, and so that the device used to close said aperture may not be easily dotached or removed by means of coming in contact with adjacent objects. In order to accomplish this, the said cap is provided on its outer side, adjacent to and at either side of said aperture 0, with integral projecting dovetail lugs F, arranged so as to be nearer together at one end than the other. W is a wedge-shaped block of wood made to fit the space between said lugs F, and is adapted to be driven in tight between them and thus effectually close said aperture 0. If desired, a thin sheet of rubber packing R may be introduced between said block and cap to more effectually close said aperture; but it is not absolutely necessary to use said rubber packing, as the block of wood if properly fitted between the lugs F will effectually close said aperture. The height of said lugs F prevents said block W from coming in contact with adjacent objects and thus cause its removal. By the use of, such block of wood a very cheap and efiective means for closing said feed-aperture is obtained, and one that renders it unnecessary to fit up said cap in any manner before it can be used. This wedge-block WV may be made of'metal, if desired, in which case the rubber packing B would be necessary to use between it and the cap to insurea tight-fitting joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
1. The combination, with the car-wheel A, of the cap P, having the feed-aperture O and the converging dovetail lugs F, arranged, re-
.spectively, at either side of the said aperture, bolts D, and the wedge-shaped wood block IV, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a self-lubricating car-wheel having a storage-chamber surrounding its box, a cap 'for closing said chamber, having a feed-aperture and having converging dovetail lugs arranged one at either side of said aperture, in combination with a wood block adapted to be driven between said lugs and close said feed-aperture, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a car-wheel having a storage-chamber in its hub and a feed aperture leading to said chamber, of the converging dovetail lugs arranged one at either side of said feed-aperture, and a woodblock adapted to be driven between said lugs and between said lugs, substantially as and for close said feed-aperture, substantially as and the purpose set forth. for the purpose set forth.
