IMPROVEMENT lN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 43,890, dated August 23, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH ANGER. and JOSEPH PRESTELE, both ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part otl this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of our invention. Fig. 2,is a rear elevation ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line x Fig. 1. Fig. et is a detached sectional view-of the cam-shaft and parts connected therewith.

The object ot our invention is to construct and arrange the several parts cfa sewing-machine in such a manner that the same, however rapidly operated, will work comparatively noiseless and perfectly sure.
The invention consists, first, in the employment or use of a disk ot' untanned leather or rawhide toothed, so as to mesh with the ordinary driving-gear of a sewing-machine in such a manner that a rapid motion from said driving-gear can be transmitted to the main shat't ot' the sewing-machine without causing the least noise, and at the same time a durable gear is provided; second, in the arrangement ot' one or more adjustable friction-rollers at the lower end ot' the cam-lever which imparts motion to the needle, in combination with a curved projecting rim that forms the cam, in such a manner that said frictionrollers can be kept in close contact with the sides of the projecting rim or cam, thereby producing a surc and noiseless motion of the cam-lever; third, in the peculiar construction and arrangement ot the feed-motion consistingot'a feed-wheel provided with a iiange extending near its periphery parallel to the axis, and a toggle-lever made to vibrate upon the axis, in combination with a toggle-piece and jaw-piece placed insidev of the ange in the wheel and provided with bearingpoints outside ot' a radial line, in such a manner that by moving the lever in one direction the bearing-points are brought nearer to a radial line, thereby causing the toggle-piece to bind rmly between the rim ofthe feed-wheel -To enable others skilled in the art to make and usel our invention, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the frame ofthe machine, prol vided with bearings a. a, in which the camshaft Bis made to revolve. Firmly secured to one end of this shaft is the small gear-wheel O, which is constructed ot' two metal disks, c c, and a disk, c', made ot' nntanned leather or rawhide, the said disk c being secured be tween the disks c c and provided with cogs, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to gear into the ordinary large driving-gear, D, which is mounted on an adjustable stud, ait, in the frame A, and through which motion is imparted to the working parts ot' the machine. The cam-shaft B also bears the cam E, which is cast with a projecting rim, e, curved, so as to produce the required motion for looping the needle-thread. The motion is transmitted from the cam E to the needle-slide by means of the lever- F, and that end ot' this lever which-is in contact with the cam or rim c is provided with two frictionrollers, pp, made of rawhide or other suitable material, one being permanent-ly secured upon the cam-lever F and arranged to be in contact with one side ot' the rim e, and the other being placed upon a stud, c', made to slide in a slot, k, formed in the end ofthe lever, and provided with a setscrew, l, whereby the friction-rollers can always be kept in close contact with the sides of the rim e, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 4. The feed-wheel R, which has a flange, r, on its side, near to its periphery, rotates on a stud, M, attached in the usual way to the frame A. To the inside ot' the tlange r ajaw piece, N, is tted, and motion is imparted to the feedwheel R by the feed-lever S, that vibrates upon the stud M, and which is provided with a knife-edge projection, o, opposite thejaw-piece N. From the projection o a toggle-piece, u, extends to a cavity, a, in the jawpiece N, being situated so that its direction deviates somewhat -'rom the radial line drawn through the center of the feedwheel and the cavity a. One end of the feedlever, which extends below the stud M, is provided with a pin, to which the usual connect- -ing-link is attached, and it receives a vibratlng motion in the ordinary manner by means ot' an eccentric upon the cam-shaft and rockshaft. From the feed-lever S a projection rises above the stud M, opposite to the end of the jaw-piece N, and a set-screw passing through said projection works against the jawlpiece, whereby the lattercan be set of from the lever and made to bear closely against the inner side ot' thetlange of the feed-wheel. Y A spring, q, placed between a raised portion ot1 the frame A and the t'eed-iever, tends to -press the feedlever off from thejaw-piece and prevents the shake which, with ordinary machines, occurs when the pin ofthe feed-lever has Worked loose in the connecting-link.
From the foregoingdescription it is evident that the friclionrollers 19 p can b e set at any time, so as to he in close eontaetwith the cam E, thereby transmitting the motion of said cam at all times perfectly accurate and without noise, even when rapidly operated; and, furthermore, by the particular arrangement ofonr feed-motion the stitches are made perfectly reg ular and of any desired length. y
What We claim tas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The employment or use of a toothed disk, c, of untanned leather or rawhide, and 'meshing with the ordinary driving-gear, D, ofa sewing-machine, as and for thepurpose described.
2. The arrangement of the adjustable friction-rollerspp upon the cam-lever F, in combination with the projectingv rim e of the cam E, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein, specified. 3. The arrangement ot" the adjustable jawpieee N and toggle'- piece fw, `in combination with the feed-lever S and feed-wheel R, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
