CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,503, dated October 14, 1890.
Application filed June 3, 1890. Serial No. 354,083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. STOTLEMYER, of Little Orleans, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and ro use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvev ments in combined corn-planters and fertilizer-distributers; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the zo claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine, portions being broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line r Qc, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the reference-letter d indicates the supporting-frame, composed of end sills and parallel cross-sills 1 2 3.

'e e are Sleeves or hubs rigid on the shaft at the inner end of each wheel-hub, each sleeve being hollow at its inner end and containing a hub f, longitudinally movable on the axle,
and provided with a squared end fitting a squared socket in its sleeve, so that the two parts rotate together. The outer end of the hub is provided with inclined ratchet-teeth, as shown, to mesh with corresponding teeth g on the inner edge of the driving-wheel hub,
and the said teeth are held yieldingly in engagement by a spring h in said sleeve. By
this means the wheels rotate the shaft when the machine is proceeding forward; but when the machineis being backed or turned around, so that one wheel rotates backward, the wheel or wheels will rotate independent of the axle, as the said ratchet-teeth will run loosely over each other. The axle-hubs and said sleeves have overlapping flanges which keep out dirt,
sand, &c. The inner ends of said sleeves are provided with inclined ratchet-teeth ,7' to mesh with the corresponding teeth on the inner ends of the sliding clutch-sleeves or gearwheels o, loose on the axle, and each provided with the radial spokes or arms p, the corresponding marker-arms q, and with the annular groove of', in which a laterally-swinging 6o bent rod or ring s loosely lit-s to allow free rotation of the gear, but to move the same into or out of gear with its sleeve e when swung laterally, and the two rods s have their outer free ends connected by suitable connections to a lever t, mounted' on the rear cross-sill 1 of the main frame, wherebythe two clutches are simultaneously thrown into or out of gear with the sleeves c e.
The boxes 4 4 are mounted on opposite ends 7o of a cross-frame 5, upon which the drivers seat 6 is also mounted. Each box is divided into two compartments 7 S-one for the seed and the other for fertilizer. The board 5, upon which the boxes are mounted, forms the bot- 7.5 toms of the same, and in the bottom of each compartment is provided with a transverse discharge-opening 9.
A circular vibrating plat-e or disk l0 is 1ocated above a casing 11, beneath each box 8o and the board carrying the same, and a funnel 12 depends from each casing and terminates in a iiexible tube 13, extending into a furrow-opening shoe or drill 14. Each feedplate is centrally journaled on a stationary pin carried by said board 5, and is provided with a rigid radial arm 14', extending beyond the end of board 5, at which the plate is located in the path of the rotating arms p, and with an inwardly-projecting stud or arm 15, 9o and the arms 15 of the two plates are engaged by the spring 16, secured to the board 5, and thereby hold the plates in their normal positions. Each feed-plate is provided with transverse openings 17 17, corresponding and nor- 95 mally registering with the openings 9 in the bottom of the seed and fertilizer compartments. As the machine proceeds forward, the clutches being in gear, the arms p revolve and separately engage the arms 14 of the roo feed-plates and rock said plates against tension of spring 16 until transverse apertures 17 pass from beneath openings 9 and into alignment with openings 1S through casing 11, thereby simultaneously discharging corn and fertilizer for a hill into funnel l2, from which it passes through tube 13 into the furrow. The size of the openings in the feedplate can be varied to regulate the quantity of corn and fertilizer placed in each hill by means of small slides l 9, provided with screws for regulating them. As each arm 14 frees itself from a rotating arm p, the spring 16 returns the feed-plates to their normal positions.
Each opening-drill is provided with a pair of spring covering-teeth 20, at their upper ends, secured to the drill, and each drill is carried by a pair of links 2l, at their front ends pivoted to the cross-sill 3 of the main frame, and having the drill at its upper end pivoted to their rear ends to allow its lower end to swing in the line`of draft, and each drill is yieldingly held in its normal posit-ion by the links 22, pivoted to the front side of the drill beneath the connection with links 21, and at their front ends on opposite sides of and above the links 2l,secured to one end of a bow-spring 23, at its opposite end secured to and between links 2l and exerting its tension through links 22 forward upon the drill to hold the same in its normal upright position, and hence if the drill in operation engages a stump, large stone, dsc., it will swing back and slide over the stone without injury, the links 22 compressing the spring, which draws the drill to its normal position when the obstacle is passed.
The drills are connected by suitable connections 24 with a lever 25, mounted in the front part of the machine, whereby the drills can be lifted from operative position, and the lever is provided with a suitable catch, so that the drills can be held up when the machine is not in operation.
The machine can be provided with the cultivating-shovels 26, if desirable, attachable to cross-sill 2.
As the fertilizing material is liable to cake and lump in the feed-compartments, each fertilizer-com partment is provided with a springscraper 26', consist-in g of a spring-rod secured to the frame at one end and extending up through the side of the compartment down into the same and provided with an end forming a scraper, which works back and forth over the discharge-opening 9, thereby feeding the fertilizer through said opening. This rod 2G has a portion bent outwardly into the path of the revolving arms p, so that the parts described without departing from the l scope and spirit of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein set forth.

In a corn-planter, the wheels loose on the axle, having inclined ratchet-teeth on the inner ends ot' their hubs, in combination with the sleeves rigid on the axle, having springhubs in their ends rot-ating with the sleeves and longitudinally movable on the axle, and provided with the inclined ratchet-teeth at their inner ends yieldingly held in engagement with said teeth of the wheel-hubs, substantially as described.
2. In a corn planter, the combination of the seed and the fertilizer compartments, a discharge-opening in the bottom of each compartment, a horizontal oscillating plate located beneath said compartments aud having transverse feed-openings adapted to register with said discharge-opening, the casing be neath said plate, said plate having a spring to yieldingly hold it in its normal position, a radial arm extending outwardly from said plate, and the hub on the axle driven from a wheel and having the radial arms, into thc path of which said arm of the plate extends to operate said plate to discharge seed into the seed-tube, substantially as described. l
S. In a corn-planter, the combination of the fertilizer-box and means for feeding the fertilizer from the same, the rotary hub on the axle of the machine, havinga series of radial arms, and the spring-stirrer rigidly secured at one end with a portion extending into the path of said arms and the reciprocating portion sliding back and fort-h over the dischargeopening in the bottom of said compartment,- substantially as described.
