' O; M. HAYDEN.
RIGGING OF vBs ELs.
INVENTOI? 6.7x. &%/a7 By A TTOIHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. HAYDEN, OF SOUTH TI-IOMASTON,-MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF, AMOS ,FISK, AND FREDERICK S. HAYDEN, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
mccmc OF VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,076, dated October 7, 1890. Application filed January 28, 1890. Serial No, 338,346. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. HAYDEN, of South Thomast-on, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Rigging of Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in the rigging of vessels, and has for its object to prevent the mast-hoops from clinging to the mast when the sail is raised, and to cause all the hoops to sustain an equal strain, thereby avoiding all danger of tearing the sail.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which drawing represents a side elevation of a sail fitted to a mast and embodying my improvement.
The sail 10 is fitted with any form of masthoop 11 in the usual way, and upon the fore side of the mast 12, at or near the saddle, one end of a rope or chain 13 is made fast, which rope is carried upward and secured to each of the hoops 11, the upperend of the rope being firmly attached to an eye in the gaff-bail 14, the said bail being preferably provided with a friction-roller 15, or a shoe bearing against the mast and adapted to assist in elevating the sail. The rope 13 maybe attached to the mast-hoops in a number of ways. The preferred connection, however, consists in screwing into the mast-hoops screw-eyes and twisting or clamping the ropes in said eyes.
If in practice it is found desirable, two ropes may be employed, in which event one is located at each side of the mast and attached to opposite sides of the mast-hoops, the lower ends of the ropes being secured to the saddle and the upper ends to the jaws of the gait, or the single rope 13 maybe spliced at the upper hoop and the ends secured to the jaws of the gaff.
The halyards are run in the usual manner, the peak-halyard 19 being secured to the peak of the gaff and rove through a block secured to the mast and led downward to the deck, the throat-ha] yard 20 being attached to the throat of the gaff and rove also through a block and carried downward to the deck, as illustrated.
By connecting all the mast-hoops in the manner above described they are held horizontally or at a right angle to the inner edge of the sail, and are prevented from binding against the mast when the sail is elevated, and thereby retarding the upward movement of the sail and endangering the safety thereof.
WVhen the two ropes or chains 13 and 16 are employed to connect the mast-hoops, the friction roller or shoe may be omitted from the gaff-bail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a sail, the masthoops, the gaff provided with a bail, and the mast, of a rope or chain attached at one end to the mast and also attached to each of the mast-hoops, the upper end of said rope or chain being attached to the gaff-bail, substan tially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a sail, its masthoops and gaff, of a mast, a bail attached to the gafi, provided with a friction-roller bearing against the mast, and a rope or chain secured at one end to the mast at or near. the saddle and connected with each of the masthoops, the upper end of said rope or chain being secured to the gaff-bail, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES M. HAYDEN.
