Description

(No Model.)
W. H. KASBBERG.
VEHICLE BRAKE,
Patented Oct. '7, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. KASEBERG, OF W'ASOO, OREGON.
VEHICLE-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,834, dated October 7, 1890. Application filed July 23,1890. $erial No. 359,671. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KASEBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wasco, in the county of Sherman and State of Oregon, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Vehicle-Brakes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in Vehicle-brakes, and it has more particular reference to that class of brakes in which the brake is applied to the side edges of the felly instead of the face of the periphery of the wheel; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and powerful wagon-brake of this character, the several parts being so arranged that when a slight pressure is applied to the operatinglever the felly of the wheel will be securely grasped between the brake-shoes and held against rotary movement.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invent-ion is clearly illustrated in theac- Jmpanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference in dicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings-- Eigure 1 is a perspective view of the running-gear of a wagon, the same being shown as provided with a brake constructed and applied in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the brake upon an enlarged scale, the positions assumed by the several parts when the brake is applied being indi cated by dotted lines.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the reach, B B the axles, and O C the wheels, of the wagon.
D is a rod or shaft, which is suitably journaled at its inner end within the bearings I) upon the under face of the wagon-bottom in advance of the rear wheel O, the free end of the said shaft being extended outwardly and provided with the operating-lever E at the side of the wagon and conveniently accessible. The crank arm or lever F is at its free end contained within a transverse slot F in the link G by means of a bolt F passed therethrough. IVithin the horizontal slot G formed in the opposite end of the lever G, are pivotally secured the inner ends of the levers G the opposite ends of said levers belng pivoted within the rear ends of the levers I, horizontal slots I being provided in the ends of said levers for their reception.
The levers I are pivoted at a point ad; acent to their free ends by means of vertical pivots or bolts 1 passed through the timbers J and K, between which timbers the said levers I are passed. The inner faces of the levers I at their free ends are provided with shoes or wearin g-plates I ,-which shoes, when the brake is applied, are adapted to bear against the outer edges of the felly of the wheel, one upon each side, as shown.
The operation of the brake will be readily understood in connection with the foregoing description. when the brake is off or out of engagement with the wheel, the parts will occupy the positions shown in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. IVhen it is proposed to apply the brake, the lever E is drawn back ward, thus forcing the levers G into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings and forcing the free ends of the levers I inward and applying the brake.
It will be understood that a brake constructed in accordance with my invention may be applied to machines of various kinds, and I do not propose to limit myself in its application to wagons only.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described improvement in vehicle-brakes, the same comprising, in combination with the running-gear of a vehicle, the rod D, journaled at its inner end within bearings secured to the lower face of the wagonplatform and having its free end provided of the wheel, substantially as shown and de- I with an operating-lever, the link F, pivotally scribed, and for the purpose specified. connected atone of its ends to the shaft D, In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n the levers G pivotally connecting the levers presence of two Witnesses.
F and I the timbers J and K, between which T V l the leve rs I are pivoted at a point adjacent to W L M H KASEBERG' their free ends, the levers I, pivoted as de- Witnesses: scribed and provided with wearing-plates O. J. BRIGHT,
adapted to engage the side faces of the felly V. O. BROCK.
