Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wall Ornamentation; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I

My invention relates to the ornamentation of tiles or panels in wall ornamentation. It is used in connection with the formation of such finishing in plastic materials as wrought upon the surface of the tile while the material is plastic, the material being'allowed to set or harden after it has been finished, and obviously this may be applied to tiles made separately and applied to the wall as other tiles are applied, or it maybe applied directly to the wall to form ornamental figures in borders or panels.

The material used preferably by me in connection with the method here described is a gypsum preparation mixed with materials which will retard the setting; but I do not confine myself to the use of this, as water, cement, or any plastic may also be used for the purpose.

I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face View of the tile or 'panel ornamented in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section of a tile with the operating-block.

In the drawings, A represents the tile, a being the plastic material of the face.

The figure B represents trees having branches b b. This representation of trees with their branches is formed by means of the block 0, and may be simply a small piece of plate made nearly the size of the panel portion of surface or tile to be ornamented. While the plastic material is still soft, the board is laid directly upon it with a smooth face downward and with a lower edge of the board a little above the lower edge of the panel or tile. Then the block is moved from side to side gently and slightly, so asto move the air out from under the block. Then the block is slightly lifted at the upper edge, the surface being in substantially vertical plane, and the plastic material adheres to the board in lines running vertically or in a direction approximately vertical, being at right angles to the line of lateral movement of the block used to expel the air, as above described. These lines, all adherent, are numerous at the top; but as the block is raised at the upper end slightly from the surface and at the same time gently slips downward the lines run together in grooves into single lines or one from each group, and these form the tpunks, or what represents the trunks, of trees, and as the Whole block is lifted off, being slightly swung from the upper end, the lower parts are larger and raised higher than the upper parts ofthe figures thus formed. Preferably the surface of the block in contact with the plastic material is slightly rounded from top to bottom, it being understood that the top of the block is the part lifted 01f first.

. I claim as my invention The mode of ornamenting plastic surfaces, as above described, the same consisting in applying a substantially smooth block to the surface while the material is soft and then gradually lifting it 0d, first slightly from the top, while moving it slightly downward.
