H. A. PEABODY. FENCE POST.
Patented Sept. 16, 1890.
.A 7TORNEYS ms PETERS cm, vnerwmmm, WASHINGTCN, u. c.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ADAMS PEABODY, OF UKIAI-I, CALIFORNIA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,634, dated September 16, 1890. Application filed February 13, 1890- Serial No. 340,343. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ADAMS PEABODY, of Ukiah, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
This invention relates to metal fence-posts suitable for net-Wire fencing 'or Wire, barbed or otherwise, of any kind; and it consists in a novel construction of such posts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more par- .ticularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceposts, which are of bar-like construction, are
made of metal and of any desired height or weight, and plain or ornamental, to adapt the same to fencing in yards, fields, or ranches, on level lands or over mountainous ranges. Each corner-post A mainly only differs from either side post A by being made double instead of singlethat is,with its uprightor body portion with two front and back faces at right or other angles with each other, instead of an upright in the same plane only.
Consecutive series of perforations a a, in pairs, are made through the upright portions of the postone above the otl1erfor the insertion of staples b b, which may be secured by clinching or otherwise, the same forming loops for the insertion through and twisting of the wirestretchers c a, about or otherwise engaging with them. These wires need not be more than six inches or thereabout apart, one above the other, excepting, if desired,
where a plank railing cl d is used in addition, which railing is made by planks dropped into hook shaped pocket like projections e e on the one or inner face of the upright portions of the posts.
The lower portions of the posts are made with shoulder or ground cap-plates f, designed to rest upon the earth or to be buried beneath the surface thereof, as may be deemed best, and projecting from the under side of this ground-cap or base-plate are any number of tapering anchoring protuberances or pointed end pieces g, capable of being easily driven into the ground and virtually forming lower points to the posts. These pointed end pieces 9, of which each post is preferably provided with a cluster, have their bearing-surfaces sufficiently extended to make the posts stand firmly in the ground, the ground orcap plates f assisting. To give said pointed end pieces a better hold, they are made with tapering ribs or wings s on their sides, thereby increasing their bearing-surface and more effectually preventing the post from turning.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metal fence-post comprising a metal bar provided with the series of apertures a and the hook-shaped projections e on its inner face near the upper end, and the ground cap-plate f, secured to the lower end of the bar and having the tapering protuberances g and the ribs 3 secured to the cap-plate and to the protuberances, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described fence-post consistin g of an angular bar havingits two members approximately at right angles to each other, each member being provided with the apertures o, and a hook-shaped projection e on its inner face, and the ground cap-plate f, having the tapering protuberances g and the ribs 8 extending from the cap-plate to the protuberances, as set forth.
