- IMPROVsME-NTIN HEM P-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent Nor 3,654, dated July-20,118.64.
To (L ZZ whom it'may concern/ Be it knowmthatl, THoMAs L. FORTUNE,
of Weston, in the .cofnty of Platte and Statef Missouri, haveinvented a new and useful 1in,l
provement in Portable Hemp-Brakes and' I do hereby declare that-the following is a' full..
-tion of t'h'ehemp-b-rake with awagon, gearing being si. arranged asto operate the brake by means of the traveling vwheels of the wagon;
secondly, in the combination of ahemplcleaner with a wagon; and, thirdly, in certainV pey culiararrangements ofdevices for' hempb'rakesand for operating the same.
In theaccompa'nying drawings,-Figure. 1 is Fig; 2 is a Fig. 3.is a vertical section through` the cleaners, showing .the gearing by which they are operated. Fig. 4
is a vertical section throughthe brake, also showing the cog-gearing by which the brake is operated. i
.In the construction of my machine I make a strong wagon with wheels A B,('as.seen in Fig. 1,) and a frame, C, provided with uprights'on which are supported rails D. I prefer making the ooro f the wagon of slats.
'-.Upon'the'frame C is mounted the hemp-brake and cleaners, which are so geared to the wagon that they are all set in motion when thewagou is' drawn forward inthe usual manner. My machine, as seen' in Fig. 1, is intended to accommodate four workmen-two on eac side-ridi'ng uponthe wagon. l
In the middle-of the machine 1s arranged a cireularor reel-shaped beater, 'having'knive`s or lbeaters E, anda cog-wheel, F, for operating the same. 'Under this beater is a sen1i circular beater 'oflarger diameter, having beaters or knives'G, and atoothed segment,
H, which gears into the teeth of wheel F and. communicates motion thereto.
beater-iis rocked backward ,and forward, as
The lower will bezhereinafter explained, and'carries with it thc upper beater. The hemp may be introduced between theseI beaters on either or both sides ofthe machine. f
beater or cleaner, consisting of two ripper?v hinged beaters, L'M. Figs. 1 and. 3,v and"a lower beaten,I T. K, bf larger diameter. lower beater has twoscts of knives or' s words'," I, or' twoZworking-faces, and is rocked back ward and forward, so as to alternately strike eachofthe'upper beaters.l By this vrocking orqs-winging stroke the-beaters are brought in contactat' both ends and throughout their whole length at the `same time, and with auni-` form stroke from end to end.A The upper 4beaters being'hinged lat t', Fig. 3,'they receive the lower beater with an elastic stroke limited bythe weight of the upper beaters.
The hemp to vbe cleaned is laid upon the wires N, the beaters L M being r'aisedfor the .introductionfof the hemp. The knives or swords M are set nearer together at o ne end of the beater than at the other, in order to facilitate the cleaning, by at first using the ends of the beaters where the knives are more-dis- 4 y tant from each other, and afterward using the other ends of the beaters as the hemp becomes more flexible and nearly cleaned.
1 The arrangenent of -the gearing and the mode of operating the brake and cleaners are shown in Figs. 2, 3,l and 4. A bevel gear* wheel, R, is attached to the wagon-wheel A, and gives motion to the pinion l, crank-shaft O, and crank S, Figs. 1, 2. By means of the connecting-rod T, motion is communicated A#to the rock-shaft U, which, being thus rocked back 'and forth, gives a rocking motion to the arms W, Figs. 22 vand 4. These arms being connected -by rods Y to the beaters H, Fig. 4, the latter is also rocked back and forth, carrying with it the beaters E, as already men tioned. In like-manner, a crank-shaft, Z, receives motion on the opposite side of the wagon, as shown in Fig. 2, .and by means offrods d e lmotion is communicated to the rock-Shaftsa and b and to the cogged arms c, Figs. 2
and 3. Ast-hess armsc-rock-back'and forth, the under beaters or sectorsf EI K, receive 'a rocking motion 'by means of the cog-gear. f,
Fig. 3.- Thus thetwo sets of vbeaters are put in motion. The two pinions on-the shafts O.
and Z are held in place by set-screws, and
may be 'moved back tol throw theni out of' gear atlpleasure, when-the machine .is -to ybe@ transpngfted 'without operating.
This 'v machine could Vbe operated byfvstationary power. 1 Y
vOne advantage of my machine is the positive motion of the brake, which completelybreaks the hemp nt the first stroke. Oni the vcontrary, the cleaners not only have a limited orelastic stroke, but thebeatersL M maybe raisedatpleasure by the Workrren, thus giving them complete control ofthe cleaners, and enabling them to withdraw'the hemp from the clea'nersan'dshakethe saine, "and again replace it nn'llerfthc beaters, l thus-hasteningythefproi cess of cleaning.
The iloor ofV thew'ago'n is made of slatsfinside of the rail Cfb'ntsolid ontside-oftherail, in'order to cover1 the cog-Wheels, pinionsfand other gearing, and thns protect them from thev falling dirt and refnse matter.` The nnshitted part of the floor projects considerably beyond the rail C, in order to give room for the Work'- m n.
tI do `nbr; 4broadly claim a portable lheii.
brake, or ar brake mounted upon a wagon for` mere transportation; but 'I believe it is new to employ a Wagon-f as a motive po er to operate a hemp-brake and cleaners.
Having thus fnllydeseribed my im .ention what-I claim, and desire toseenre by Letters -latent of the United States, v'is-- arms c, -in eonnectionwith the shafts aand b,
substantially as described.
yThe use ot'. the under roeked'back and forth against theu'pper beater or beaters, substantially in ther manner and. for the purposes set forth. y. g
`el; The use'ofA the hinged upper beaters, so arranged as to yield tothe force of the under beater when'the stroke'of the latter is snlii-l cient to lift or swing up the upper-beaters, substantially asset'forth.' l
